i was thinking, why dont we play random rules here at jub?
put your mp3-player on shuffle and play, lets say, 5 songs.
write something about those songs, why you like them, or some memory connected to them, or something.

1. m.i.a. - galang
ok, thats probably the most cliche track my ipod could have chosen to start. im an art school student, and i dont think any artist has been as popular as m.i.a. in the last decade or so in the circles i move in. or as representative, for that matter, with her mix of brilliantly creative and completely ridiculous. anyway, galang is a great track. not my favourite m.i.a. track, but possibly my favourite music video of the last decade.

2. madonna - act of contrition
not a real song, the outro to her "like a prayer" album, if im not mistaken. her freak-out at the end of it is pretty cool, though. also, my favourite madonna album.

3. rosenstolz - ich bin ich (wir sind wir)
i love how unapologetically cheesy they always are...

4. nina hagen - unbeschreiblich weiblich
BINGO! as entertaning the batshit crazy ufo-godess-nina is, she was at her best when she was raw and punk. pure love!

5. kylie minogue - disco down
sweetly nostalgic, one of the best tracks from her lightyears album. so, shuffle has been quite kind to me, not coming up with anything embarassing. *puh*

1. Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs- One of my favorite bands, not one of my favorite songs. Although, this is the first song I ever heard from them way back in like 9th grade. Was a really good music video :D

2. Lullaby by Sia- One of my favorite songs from her. Reminds me of where I was two years ago and where I am today.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McEEiZU8t4Y[/ame]

3.Wednesday by Fischerspooner- Reminds me of being at work on a Saturday afternoon. Just dealing with one person after the next...

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ53ABehi3I[/ame]

4. Russia Privjet by Basshunter- Hahahah, I think this song is over the top, and reminds me of Queer As Folk. Its a good song though...

5.Got distracted by YouTube and started watching KidSongs videos hahah

1. Portishead - Strangers
* Love the beat. So dark and hypnotic.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPHKGtVLBM8[/ame]

2. Slum Village - Old Girl/Shining Star
* Hip hop that is about all the things women do for the people in their lives, rather than rapping about tits and ass. Beautiful.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYvzP6E7UuU[/ame]

3. Blonde Redhead - Messenger
* Been on a huge Blonde Redhead kick lately. Not my favorite song by theirs (I like Kazu's vocals more), but still a very fantastic song. Their songs are so depressing yet beautiful.

4. Regina Spektor - Somedays
* How could I not love this song? Regina is pretty much the best. Her voice is beautiful.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCluJ1jhYQk[/ame]

5. Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating
* Semi-danceable electronica made from video game bleeps and bloops? I'm there.

James Morrison - "Please Don't Stop The Rain"
This song reminds me of a past relationship that I still have trouble getting over :(

---

Ray LaMontagne - "Let It Be Me"
Love, love Ray's voice. Soooo soothing.

---

Anberlin - "Breaking"
Anberlin has always been one of my favorite bands, and this song from their latest album is a standout.

---

Metric - "Help I'm Alive"
One of my favorite songs of 2009.

---

Tegan and Sara - "Walking With A Ghost"

T&S consistently put out good material and this is one of their catchiest tunes IMO.

1. Nancy Wilson - Elevator Beat: Probably the best song on the Soundtrack to Vanilla Sky and it played at a really good part in the movie.

2. Candy Dulfer Smooth: I heard this on 94.7 The Wave on my way to class, it was such a nice smooth jazz song that I had to download it.

3. Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel: I always liked Michael Jackson's music even though this was not my favorite song it had a good music video to it.

4. The Isley Brothers - Hello It's Me: I bought the album Love Songs and this was the first track on there I fell in love with it. :)

5. P.M. Dawn - About Nothing (For The Love of Destiny): My brother had to album I ripped the CD onto my computer and I enjoyed this song and actually the entire Bliss Album. Can't find a video of it on YouTube.

You have no idea how much I love that song. I was kinda obsessed with it for a little bit a few months back. I adore Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but that song is a whole other level...

Foo Fighters - "Learn To Fly"

Not my favorite from them, but I have their whole Greatest Hits on my MP3 player and this one constantly pops up. Good song, just hear it a few too many times. Video is great BTW.

Blind Melon - "Tones of Home"

Fantastic, and very underrated song, that helped me get into BM big time. Great energy, love the lyrics and the singing by Shannon Hoon is great IMO.

Andrew W.K. - "Party Hard"

Always loved this song for when I'm working out or doing something intense. Can really get me going if I have to run or lift weights. Also makes me laugh in parts at how "hard" he's trying to sound intense.

Stone Temple Pilots - "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart"

Another song I've heard about a million times too much. Love the riff and the chorus, but I don't ever think I really got, or cared, what this song was about.

Queen - "I Want To Break Free"

What can you say? It's Queen... and it's great. Have their Absolute Greatest and a few random tracks on my MP3 all the time.

I definitely liked this song way more than any other song by YYY's

This will be surreal. I have so much on the iPod, I might not be able to write much. Some I might not even remember putting on there. Well, let's give it a go.

1. "Vein Melter" - Herbie Hancock

Wow, started off with a great one. Head Hunters is probably my favorite album ever. A great jazz/funk combo that steers clear of boring "fusion" or "smooth jazz" cliches that came later. It took a while before this song appealed to me, but now it's my favorite track on there. I didn't get the title at first, but then I realized how I'd go cold all over whenever the song hit the weird keyboard bit at around 6:03. Now it makes perfect sense. :)

I thank my old piano teacher for loaning this album back in the mid 80s. She created a jazz fan for life.

2. "Silent Night" - Bing Crosby

Back in October, in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season, I made an effort to make myself a decent-sized folder of holiday music. I found a list of "popular holiday classics", and then listened to various renditions, looking for ones that floated my boat. I often would buy several versions of the same track - a modern rock version, a classic "vocal" version, an instrumental take, a church organ version. I listed the year on all of them as "2512" so I can pick them out easily. I listened a lot before Christmas, and as a lark, I'd occasionally put that folder on "shuffle" while I worked out if it was cold and snowy out.

No real specific love for this version, but it's nice.

3. "Dandelion" - Rolling Stones

Never been a huge Rolling Stones fan, and I'm even less so of their "flowers" period. They just never sounded right being trippy to me. That said, I've collected a lot of chart singles from across the decades, and this made #14 in 1967, which is why I own it. Not much a fan.

4. "Statue of Liberty" - XTC

Oddly, I picked an XTC song for my "Lex's Lost Retro Song" today...but not this one. One of their more frenetic and bouncy numbers from their early days. The keyboardist went on to found Shriekback. Not one of their best songs, but it's fun to sing along to.

5. "Here Come the Warm Jets" - Brian Eno

Originally got this on a "sampler" CD for when they (re)released Brian Eno's 70s output on CD. He's pretty much known either as a producer (Joshua Tree? him) or an ambient artist now, but he put out some pop-type stuff back in the 70s. I really like the feel of this track, and the muttered/chanted, nearly buried vocals that show up near the end. As much as I like the track, I never did get around to buying the full album. (I've heard it, liked it enough, but not enough to buy.)

Keep your bankroll lottery eat your salad day deathbed motorcade. I mean, it's pretty obvious. :)

Fantasia Barrino - Pass Me Not
Wouldn't say I'm a HUGE Fantasia fan, but this entire scene made me love her performance, her voice, and this song so much more. The first time I heard it, I just felt something and was like "wow". ..| Tasia for this. I get excited whenever my mp3 player comes across it. The way she opens it and the chorus coming in later. AWESOME

Mike Posner - Speed Of Sound
Very new to me (like 3 days ago) hadn't heard of him but his two mixtapes available for FREE download at his official site and his Facebook. Really liked the first one which has this song and his covers of Kiss Me Through The Phone and Don't Trust Me. His covers of Over My Head and Halo are pretty ace as well. He's my new fav guy at the moment. Its been months since I found an album that I could listen to without skipping a track and he accomplished that. This song in particular stood out mostly because of his tone and the way he delivers the lyrics, it made it all seem very familiar and akin to something that I've gone through

Sugarland - Stay
Randomly saw the video a couple years ago when I accidentally landed upon the country music channel. Never heard of them, as I never watch/listen to country channels BUT the female here did an incredible job and I instantly loved it. Her emotional delivery was fantastic and though I've never been in the situation that she sings about, it struck a cord with me. Since then I've constantly been on the hunt for "country" songs in the vain of this one. PLEASE let me know if you have any recommendations. Love this one a ton.

T.I., Lil Scrappy, P$C - I'm A King
A song from that awesome Hustle & Flow movie. Can't describe why I love this song but I do and know every word. Guess its because I AM a king and it was my ringtone for the longest time. And TI's sexy, has nothing to do with this, but the beats hot and so is TIP...

Tamia - Stranger In My House
IMHO one of the most underrated RnB vocalists around. She is beautiful and her voice is incredible and would put sooo many of these girls around to shame. Crazy how she hasn't reached incredible fame. She has had her "jumps" of popularity but then she goes away for a bit. Again love Tamia and know every word to this song. Something I sing in the shower/in my car as if I have even a modicum of singing talent LoL
