Chapter 1
Although it seems like the distant future, some days I forget that this is reality. I can remember that only ten years ago the world was just entering its technology era with the introduction of HD television. Now look at the world. Television does not exist, no one uses clocks, and computers haven’t been needed for almost five years now. I seem to be the only one who knows, or more accurately remembers this.
In 2009, a company by the name of Lime Technologies sprang up out of nowhere totally out buying Dell, Best Buy, HP, Sony… etc. Its founder was Stephen Duke Diederich a German scientist, his last name meaning skeleton key. His family had been a major power in Germany for almost three decades this power being weaponry, the Diederich family had basically reinvented the weapon manufacturing industry of Germany. But Stephen was interested in something else.
Lime Technologies became the first to introduce Mites. A computer smaller than most single celled organisms, at first they were only going to be used as computers but when Stephen reconfigured a batch of fifty Mites and injected them into his body something spectacular happened. All fifty Mites flowed through his blood stream into his brain and attached themselves. The Mites started to communicate with his brain and with each other almost doubling his brains capacity for information. The one downside to this experiment is that the Mites tend to destroy ones memory that is 99.9% of the time leaving only small bits of your life left. Ever since that day, technology has grown beyond human belief.
And here I sit in Sector 4 Block D. Yes, there are Mites in my brain but I’m one of the few people who remembers the past. Just like HD television became a requirement for everyone to have in 2009 it became a requirement that everyone have Mites implanted into their brains. Most people were not happy about this; they thought that taking away a person’s memory wasn’t ethical. But the bill still passed for every person to get the injection. Most people made videos to show themselves after they got the injection so that they at least know who the person sitting to their left was.
No body works anymore though. After the death of Stephen Diederich Lime Technologies became his son's company and he expanded it massively. He created the first hub in Germany in 2013. It was basically a building where people were put in chambers and their mind was connected to a central operating system that created whatever you wanted and projected it into your mind. In the past, I think they called this Virtual Reality, but that was long ago.
I live and work in France. One of the few jobs still available to people is in these hubs. Other than that, some people work at the power plants in Russia or the farms in America. Other than that no other building exist they were all demolished and grass a trees were put in their place. Streets were torn up and buried, all plastic was melted down and mixed with concrete the help make the hubs. It does seem weird to think about but the world is now as it was when only animals used to roam. Even in the few years that we’ve let nature take over, we have seen many improvements in ecosystems that we thought were dying and no animals are on the verge of extinction any more. Life is quiet.
We don’t get paid for out work though there is no need for it everything is provided to us. All five of the workers in the France hub have huge mansions just a few meters away and we are provided with anything we want. Everyone else in France lives inside the hub, in their own little pod-like chamber sitting alongside their families and other strangers, all of them dreaming about whatever they want.
When I first started working in this hub, I frequently got questioned on why I wanted to work instead of going into my fantasy. My usual response was, ‘I don’t want my body to look like it hasn’t seen the day of light in years, I like my tan.’ Of course, that’s not the real reason. Along with the invention of Mites, the scientists at Lime Technologies also discovered the ‘gay gene’ and how to reverse its ‘effects.’ With everyone losing their memories, people were basically reverted into their primal selves. As a result, being gay was pronounced as unnatural and every gay person had to register themselves as such. They announced that the procedure to rid the body of the gay gene was voluntary. Neither my husband Rick nor I wanted to get the procedure. Then the day came when Rick wanted to live his life in the hub.
It was 2015 and we were living in New York. I was still unsure if I wanted to live in the hub so Rick decided to go first and he would tell me what it was like a week later. That week passed in a haze, I was busy with my work as one of the computer operators at the hub. I would sometimes look into Rick’s fantasy world. He was living in ancient Rome as a gladiator in very tight pants.
When he came out a week later and told me about it, he said it was life altering. I came to find out the day after he came out of the hub the world government had put this cure to the gay gene in every hub in the world. My husband was straight and he soon left me and entered the hub permanently.
My body became an emotional beehive. I could not stop myself from crying. We had been together for twenty years. We meet in middle school and I thought we would be together forever. I could not take working in the hub where he was only a few feet away from me so I requested for a transfer to the hub in France.
I’m thirty five years old now, its 2019 and my life is just beginning.
