Refilling printer cartridges

I have an old HP720C printer using the HP23D cartridge. Most of you know the abusive prices of the hp cartridges, so this time I have tried to refill it. Everything has been ok but after the refilling the f**king printer does not recognize the cartridge. I only have made a very small hole on the top to inject the new ink. Any ideas of what can I do now? Many thanks in advance.

(Buying a brand new modern printer or an original hp cartridge is not an option ;))

I tried refilling my cartridges myself once..........and I ended up with ink everywhere and the cartridges didn't work afterward. I thought fuck it, i'd just spend the money and buy new ones!

I saw this on ebay. At first, I thought it would be easy and clean. It is, but it doesn't work :(

The buggers have made the cartridges *smart*. If you take out and re-install a full cartridge it will tell the printer that it is empty.

I prefer Epson but they can screw you too. U thought HP carts were expensive. hahaha

Listen to noelie. They are used to famines there.;)

My Lexmark has stopped working - it's over a year old and I used it three times :( but it only cost 40 euro (US$55) so I'm not too unhappy and I can leave it in to be recycled when I buy a new printer - which leads me on nicely to my next point.

There's a sale on in a local store and I'm looking at the Canon Pixma MP460 which is going for 70 euro (US$95). Why have I told you that? Because I've read through about 20 reviews and I read up on their software and how easy it is to replace and refill their cartridges - I'm taking no chances.

You really need to do your homework these days - it's a pain in the ass but when you get your lovely new printer home and first off discover that it doesn't come with a USB cable and then you have to perform something akin to a black mass mixed with voodoo complete with drinking the blood of a hen and then offering your first-born or a goat to the ancient goddess of whatever just to get the damn ink into it THEN you install the software and you have to reboot five times and of course it'll reboot four times just fine but the fifth time you reboot you get a blue screen of death and you have to borrow someone else's laptop to get here to ask a question and we all laugh at you because we told you NOT to buy a HP and in the meantime you haven't noticed that the banner ads of guys cocks and asses have been left on your Mormon friend's hard drive from your time here looking for help and he gets hauled up before his church leaders, his wife leaves him with the kids and he loses his job and kills himself.
[noelie gulps down a massive quantity of air thereby narrowly avoiding sexual asphyxia]

It is important to remember that the printer is the most mechanical of peripherals. The best way to insure it's heads don't get plugged is to print something off every day. If you are away on vacation, get your Mormon friend to house-sit. He can also look at your porn collection while he is there.
It would be really useful when purchasing a new printer to go to an actual store, not a virtual one and see for yourself what is involved in cartridge changes, pricing of ink, cables needed, presumed quality of construction, (does it weigh less than 16 oz) and sound while operating before you commit to a purchase. You can still be in for surprises like my old but wonderful Epson CX6400 which will not work if any cartridge is empty which means you have to invest much money in extra cartridges, because as we all know, a printer WILL malfunction if you try to print something just before running off to a meeting and the severity of the malfunction varies indirectly with the amount of time remaining before you must leave.
Do your homework guys or god'll kill you (even though he doesn't exist).

Funny you should say that - I watched a documentary about genes having memories and they discovered that a famine can affect (or is that effect?) the population for several generations afterwards and cause genetic defects - or even changes for the better. Huh! Who would have thought?
That would be a) a famine can affect the population, or b)a famine can effect genetic changes....
I could always eat some sheep if I got hungry enough though :p (it would make a change to shagging them).
I thought it was Scotsmen and Kiwi's that did that.(!)

I've got a Canon Pixma mp160 currently about £50, scans and copies as well. I was so pleased with it that I recomended it to a friend and he loves it too. The software installed with no probs on my windows XP laptop and it also comes with the same software for the mac which also gave no problems. The software has great OCR and PDF abilities. Very impressive on the mac: I downloaded a PDF form & printed it out for a mate, but also noticed that it had been character recognised and I could fill it in by just typing. Any way he filled out the four pages and I scanned it back in as pdf, took just moments, Quality was as good as the original because of the ocr, then emailed it back.

As far as I can find the cartridges are not cheap but, as the print head is built in, they do not have the epson chip system to supposedly prevent head damage, so refilling is not a problem and kits are widely available. Reliability wise, I don't print often though I do leave it plugged in. I have not printed colour for well over a month and `i checked it this evening before typing this, and all nozzles are clear.

My experience with this cannon and it's software are positive, I've had it for 8 months. Hope my experience stands for something. It is far superior to my previous HP and epson printers in terms of reliability and ease of use.

I would never use refilling products as they can screw up your printer cartridges, no matter how much it sucks, I would just go out and buy a printer cartridge. It doesn't hurt.

I have a canon PIXMA MP500 and it does great fast printing of documents, pictures and scans fast, copies fast. I always stick with canon.

I just refilled two black cartridges at walgreens. They seem OK, but my new ones I had purchased sure didn't last very long. HERES HOPING!!!

I had been thinking about giving the Walgreen's thing a try, till I found out that Office Depot has their own brand of cartridges, for our Brother multi-function, for $10.00. We'll see what happens.
