Hey guys,

How successful will a relationship be when one guy is 42 and the other is 22? A 42 year old is already established, has his own routine, knows what he wants (or you would think he knows).
A 22 year old is still unsure of what he wants, he can easily adapt to accept the 42 year olds way of living, routine, etc etc.

Have any of you had this experience or know of anybody who has? How long will it last? I would think a few years, because when the 42 yr old turns 50 I don't the 22 yr old will still be with him, I would think he would want to find someone younger??

I dunno man. I don't think you can generalise any relationship in this way.
Age aside, I will say that if you go into a relationship concentrating on how it will end, then it's doomed from the start.

Depends on the maturity of both parties.

Can it be long-term? Yes. I do think, speaking extremely generally, that the bigger the age gap, the more work that needs to be done. But if both parties are willing to do the work, there's no reason why they can't make it work.

If it feels right for you now, then go with it. Quite frankly, very few relationships last even 5 years, so worrying about the distant future seems pointless to me.

I don't think it will work.
If it does, the longest I'd see it working out is maybe 15 years.

Maybe im a cynic, but with old men.. Although they may be attractive.. They tend to come, or develop problems with a little time.

I would much rather someone closer to my age though.. I've always thought it would be nice growing old with someone close.. But with an older guy I just kinda feel like.. I'm growing old after he did, and he's just growing older and old.

I mean this in no offence though. My opinion was asked, and I think it would be rude to not be honest.

It all depends on the individuals. What matters most is how people feel about each other. I’ve known several intergenerational couples. I have a friend who recently celebrated his 71st birthday. His partner of 25 years is 46. They’ve had a civil union and a church wedding. Another friend passed away last year at the age of 76. His partner is 55. They had been together 23 years and were married in the state of Massachusetts.

I’ve also known guys who are only interested in being with someone young and keep dumping guys for someone younger even while they keep aging.
