Laura Branigan, one of the greatest pop voices of the Eighties, was taken from us way too soon, just over two years ago... I can still remember the first time I heard her on the radio singing, How Am I Supposed To Live Without You and saw the amazing video Self Control. Her music and her videos still hold up well...

Laura Branigan (July 3, 1957 - August 26, 2004)

Self Control

Cry Wolf

Solitaire

Gloria

The Lucky One

How Am I Supposed To Live Without You (Live)

Thanks for the music, Laura! (*8*)

I remember reading the news on the newspaper. Just met me feel that a part, although minor, had been taken away, since that I listened to her songs in my teenage years.

I love her Forever Young, as well as Hold Me. Yeah, her greatest hits remained Gloria and Self-Control, but I still like her other tracks too. I like Shattered Glass, Tiamo, Spanish Eddie etc.

I'm reposing Self Control again, since the embedded video in my first post didn't want to work, but instead opens in a separate window.

Here's some more of Laura's incredible vocal work:

Self Control

Didn't We Almost Win It All

Spanish Eddie

Maybe Tonight

Shattered Glass

Dim All The Lights

Thanks for these videos many of them I have never before seen.

I am a fan of Laura's going back to 1982.

She was also a friend of the Gay Community, attending Gay Pride events and speaking out for our rights. Tragically her husband died young also just a few years before her.

She had a tough run of luck, her career was tragically mismanaged which resulted in her not reaching the heights she should have reached. Seh became embattled in legal tumbles ( my brother-in-law actually sued her -damn him(he is an entertainment lawyer)) and sometimes her song choices weren't the best for her talents.

The videos demonstrate that she was clearly a drama queen! ( I mean that in a good way) I bet she was alot of fun!

Sadly she passed away shortly after her career was on a strong upswing. She had been on broadway, working on a new album, and making appearances singing in the NYC gay community.

Rest in Peace Laura.

Wow - what a great thread you have going here Ned Nickerson.
I was so saddened when I heard the news of her untimely death.

"Self Control" has always been one of my favourite singles - I also loved the "b" side "Silent Partners". I also understand that one of her later projects was a cover of ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" - I've never heard it must guess she would have done it justice.

I'll just contribute one of my favourite pictures of her

My all time fave Laura song is her cover of "Power of Love." Talk about power & emotion! Have loved this song for 25 years.

Am a BIG fan of her work. I have every song she ever recorded, and there are VERY few artists I can say that about.

What a great post! Thanks a million. Everytime I need a fix I'll just come here and check out the vids. Truly a huge voice. Over the years all of the songs noted above have been engrained into my brain at some point or another.

I loved Laura, "Solitaire" is one of the most vocally powerful songs I've ever heard.

I came out to "Gloria".

What a great song to dance to my first time in the clubs!

she will always remind me of my youth. whenever i hear ti amo or self control i smile. loved her.

Wow, so glad to see this thread. I loved her when I was in high school, but most of my friends just liked her most popular songs. Her voice was so powerful and beautiful. As a closted teen who was always worried that some day his father would turn on him when he found out he was gay, one way I always had to feel closer to him was when I would share with him some new piece of music that moved me and it would always get to him too. We bonded many times just sitting and listening to some of Branigan's most beautiful songs.
