Or sometimes if a member clicks on a thread, and reads all of the replys...they might feel like that they have nothing to contribute.

I often read a thread and feel I have nothing to contribute or that someone else has already said what I was going to. It's good to lurk for a while to get the feel of the site and the people so that when you do come out of the posting closet you have something useful to contribute. I often visit a thread I have posted in to see if there has been any response to my post and if so I may make a further comment based on their reply. If not I leave without posting. Well those are my habbits.

I can only echo what others have said. I read more posts than I respond to. If I don't reply, it doesn't mean that I didn't like the post or wasn't interested. It means that I had nothing of value to contribute.

Consider this anomaly a blessing. I prefer it to the opposite phenomenon--some people post when they have absolutely nothing to add. For example, a thread might say, "Uncut Guys, What Kind of Shoes Do You Like?" and someone will respond, "Well, I'm cut, but I like crunchy Skippy peanut butter." Or a thread might ask, "What's the best gay bar in Boston?" and someone will answer, "I don't like going to bars," or "I've never been to Boston."

It's not an epidemic or anything, but there are a few posters who really don't add much to the thread. (Perhaps I myself am guilty on occasion, but I really try to post only when I have something cogent to say.) Imagine if all those non-posting viewers suddenly added this sort of non-responsive chatter.

After I post in a thread (like right now!), the thread keeps showing up in my subscribed threads on my settings page whenever a new post is added.

If I'm interested in the thread, I will keep going back to catch up on all of the new posts, often without adding any more myself. Thus pushing up the view count.

That's great. Lurk in the shadows for months and then jump somebody for posting too much. (It wasn't me they jumped, btw) Let's just say the member's username started with a 'P'.

P... p... p...

Damn, I'm not getting it. Maybe if I hum a few bars of the Magic Flute... :-({|=

Papageno?

I'd forgotten how much there is to learn about posting in a forum.

There are a lot of bells and whistles to get acquainted with on here.

When I first joined, I had never been on a forum before. I was quite overwhelmed at first, and just lurked until I figured it out.

I still read way more than I post. Many just don't prompt me to add anything at all.

Don't you agree with me?

hehe, you're in the wrong thread, Rick! Jump over to 'Just move on'. (lol)

To The Moderators and Administrators - A Suggestion

What if there were an option or two options when someone goes to view a posting, where by if they did not want to leave a posting the could click"

Read

Did Not Read.

This might give all of us here an idea of what threads and or postings are really being read, even though comments are not being left by the viewer.

Have you ever wondered what pumpkins really do at night in their puimpkin-beds when nobody's watching? ;)

Add me as one more in the tally of views on this thread. However, I have decided to totally be a lurker, and *UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES* do I intend to add anything to, or post to, this thread, in any way whatsoever.

After all, if I replied to everything I read on here, I'd never get anything done!

Well I think everyone has answered and stated the necessary.

If I like a thread's content or the way it is progressing, but I have nothing to add, then I subscribe to it and will visit each time a new post shows up.

Therefore for every new post I increase the view count by one.

What about those who have nothing to say but say it anyway?

A thread is a success when there are half as many replies as they are views.

Eg 50 replies and 100 views

Also success if there are an abundant amount of views but only a couple replies

Eg 3 replies and 1500 views. Threads like this usually include ones that have links to hot pics or videos. People will go in the thread to get the video but dont comment even though they downloaded the video. They could at least say thanks to the person that contributed but a success none the less.

Some people if they have nothing positive to say choose not to reply and others even though they have nothing positive to say reply with misdirected sarcasm.
