I read this in the paper yesterday and was dumbfounded.
the point being when ward and June's little boy is drafted and killed over in Iraq or Iran, there will be so much more dissent, that the government would have to end the wars.
I think it's a bunch of right wing propaganda bull shit.

What are you responding to? I'd like to know what you're talking about.

Just curious.

BAD IDEA!

Anyone who thinks that reinstating the draft will end the war has forgotten the lessons of the Vietnam era.

Politically connected trust fund babies like George W. Bush and Dan Quayle will find themselves in the National Guard - protecting Texas and Indiana from possible invasion.

Middle class white boys like Wally and The Beaver will go off to college and be granted an exemption from any possible draft.

Poor people named Bubba, Juan and Shaquille will fight and die in their place.

Madeupname27, that is the point of reinstating the draft. If the draft was reinstated, old Vietnam warriors like myself would be in the streets with anyone who would listen and march with us to demand that everyone 18 years and older would be drafted or there would not be a draft. Those of us who had to work our way through college and got caught up in the Vietnam draft while transferring between schools, those of us who did not have political connections but are the voters of today, those who were poor and poorly educated and could not attend college would demand that every senator's grandson and grandDAUGHTER would be drafted. If they were not physically able to fight, they would be drafted to serve as logistical support. No school deferments for professional students of the idle rich. When a U.S. Senator's grandson is sent to Baghdad or Kabul instead of Harvard or Yale, you can bet your sweet ass the troops will be coming home very soon. I have seen the war in Iraq politicized as badly as Johnson politicized the Vietnam war. It is the children of the poor who are volunteering for the military and disproportionately it is the children of the poor who are dying. If we are going to fight a war with our children as cannon fodder, we should at least have the balls to let them fight to win or bring them home.

As a former Viet Nam era Veteran , myself ... I think that MadeuName27 is very right in his opinion .. and I 2nd it ...
Those who have the $$$$ will end up in the Guard .. those who are smarter than average will be in college and the average "Joe" and on down will end up DEAD .. all in the name of Protecting the USA ... which is a crock of SH&^ !
Now is the time to begin writting your Congressmen and Senators as well as the Democratic National Party ... Tell them that you OPPOSE re-instating the "Draft" .
I'd even suggest writting to influential Democratic Party members such as Hillary Clinton etc ... stating your views ...
NOW is the time to begin to resist the Draft ; NOT after it is already re-instated . My personal letters will go out in Tuesday's mail.

I am just wondering how you make the jump to the conclusion that this article is right-wing propaganda bullshit? I didn't read anything right-wing about it. The draft is a non-issue. It's not gonna happen. I haven't heard any SERIOUS debate from a politician that it is being remotely considered. Furthermore, it would be a tragic mistake BUT, let's say for argument's sake that it did. The whole "join the National Guard to avoid the draft" wouldn't work anyway. We are in a different era than Vietnam. Read your local papers. The National Guard is fighting as much of this war as the active military. They have been deployed more than they ever have in history. The bottom line is this...we have a professional miltary that is NOT made up entirely of America's lower class citizens. I have been on the ground and in the air over Iraq and Afgahnistan and I can tell you that the US military is a diverse organization made up of citizens from all walks of life.

Just my two or three cents worth...

I'm too cynical not to think this isn't part of a bigger plan to build the empire.
Start a draft to get us out of the war, that would never happen; we have lost so many of our freedoms we are not far away from a fascist state. The right wing political machine is setting the pieces into place every day. I know this may come off a paranoid, but look around you.
The executive branch is breaking constitutional laws daily without ANY ramifications. All of our civil rights have been severely cut on the grounds of national security.
They have set up the judicial branch of the government to minimize the risk.
That leaves the legislative branch which is stuck in a quagmire of bureaucracy
Things are not good.

I can certainly understand that we all have different ways of thinking. I just don't share your cynicism. I don't live my life any differently than I did 10 years ago. I know the executive branch has done some questionable things, but you say that they have gone unchallenged. How is this true? I seem to remember a ruling by a US federal judge on 17 August ruling that the NSA wiretapping was unconstitutional. That's just one example. I have faith in the American system. We are nowhere NEAR a facist goverment as long as the American people have the ability to vote and continue to do so. Make the changes in November.

By the way, I love the saying about love at the bottom of your posts, blooeyz.

No one would go if they restarted it. I know I for one would be hopping the border to visit my nice Canadian friends ;)
