Retrograde Ejaculation

I have BPH. As a result, my doctor has recommended a TUR (resection of the prostate). He says that the only ill effect will be a 90+% of retrograde ejaculation (back into the bladder rather than out). Anyone had this experience?

I haven't had it myself, but I had a boyfriend in Vancouver (actually North Van) who had this condition. He said it was very rare and that he had been written up in medical books. Anyway, he never ejaculated externally, and I was fine with that.

Does keep down the problem of wet spots, I guess. I am trying to deal with the thoughts of it. My doctor say the orgasm is 90% and in time can increase, the only sensation missing will be the ejaculate actually coming through the urethra.

I knew surgery and radiation therapy and some diabetic conditions can cause it, I did not know people were that way from the get-go. Must have been emotional for him in his teens.

Did you get a second opinion?

Some of the academic medical centers are treating BPH using laser instead of TUR. It might be worth a trip down to UAB to get another opinion.

You still get the orgasm, just not spurting out, I know someone with this as well.........

Absolutely. The laser does the same thing at only a marginally less chance of RE. I have looked at all options - microwave therapy, drugs (i.e. Proscar, Avodart - didn't work), laser and a traditional TUR.

The TURP is still the "gold standard." Johns Hopkins is THE spot for research and advice on prostate issues.

First, I appreciate the feedback to my question about RE. I had my surgery a month ago. It was a breeze. I had to wait to try things out but was finally given the green light. Orgasm is different but not so much so that I even remotely regret the surgery. Everyting works the same except for the actual emission, which is absent. Still have copious pre-cum and the orgasm is still intense - just dry since is goes into the bladder and not out the urethra. (You piss it out later.)

Benefit: No clean-up after sex.
No more getting up at night.
Piss like I did in my twenties.
Cons: Psychological only.

Lesson Learned: If you have trouble pissing, get up a lot at night, have urgency, have pain in the prostate area (including rectal), have it checked out. If you have BPH, talk to your doctor about a resection and if it is recommended and elected (don't forget to explore and educate yourself on all options), don't fear a loss of manhood. DO find a doctor who does offer options, is experienced and does the procedures frequently. Cancer, of course, carries with it other considerations.

My boyfriend used to be able to have retrograde ejaculations by choice when I first met him. I told him that I preferred when he shot a load though so he stopped doing it and now he can't do it anymore. Not entirely relevant to this case but I thought it was interesting.
