Well, it's time to get rid of the ol' tank.

So, I'd like to know what y'all suggest for routers. I'd like to run ddwrt/tomato on the next router.

I'm thinking the asus rtn16.

I'd like to know your thoughts.

TIA

i have an old linksys wrt54g for years. installed dd-wrt on it .. configured it, and since never ever restarted the router or did anything else ..|

thus i have no clue on the current generation of home-routers .. i would check for tests etc that the wifi antenna is good and reliable (and how much more power you can give it with the other firmware).

The WRT54G/L has come-up a lot over the past few weeks of digging.

My question for you is, what's the WAN speed? THe problem I'm trying to remedy is my current router is only 10Mb/s @ half-duplex.

I use the Netgear WNDR3700. It's a wireless N/5-port gigabit router. To put it simply, it's a monster of a router.

Do some research on it and I think you'll say "want".

I'm a fan of Netgear equipment after some horrible experiences with Linksys tech support.

Unless you've got some lightning-fast Internet, the WAN port will not be your bottleneck.

Ooo, it's shinny =]

I'll have a look. Thanks for the recommendation!

I, too, have been a netgear user for years. THe current router I have I bought in 2000/2001. It can no longer handle what I throw at it.

I just spent 5 hours trying to set up a d-link I bought yesterday. What a pain! Still not working, something about winpoet (DSL) interfering with the router.

I have a dent in the wall from throwing something...

Let me know how you make out.

I would take it back, but it would cost more in gas.

Winpoet is windows software that tries to establish the PPoE connection.

If you have a router now, uninstall the software you might have installed when directly connected to the DSL modem.

THen you'll just have to setup PPoE on the router.

I bought 4 routers:

Linksys WRT54GL
Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300NH
ASUS RTN-16
Netgear WNDR3700v2

It came down to the buffalo and the netgear routers. I settled on the netgear as I've had great luck with my old netgear over the years, but the buffalo was a close second.

DDWRT installed without fail.

I found out what a colossal throttle my old router was. I was only pulling 5-6Mb/s. Now I'm pulling 20-25MB/s. (!)

Now I just have to get QoS sorted and I'll be golden.

Oh, and in my frustration, I took-apart my cable modem and found the reset button which solved the problem I was having of not getting an IP from the WAN. woot.
