On his radio talk show yesterday, the insightful and always pleasant Rush Limbaugh commented on the reasons Oprah Winfrey and President Barack Obama are successful.

"It's because they're black"

[Obama] wouldn’t have been voted president if he weren’t black. Somebody asked me over the weekend why does somebody earn a lot of money have a lot of money, because she’s black. It was Oprah. No, it can’t be. Yes, it is. There’s a lot of guilt out there, show we’re not racists, we’ll make this person wealthy and big and famous and so forth…. If Obama weren’t black he’d be a tour guide in Honolulu or he’d be teaching Saul Alinsky constitutional law or lecturing on it in Chicago.

This isn't the first time Mr. Limbaugh has commented on the President's race.

For those of you not familiar with Rush Limbaugh and his work, he is a thrice-divorced man living in Florida who recently married a fourth time. After a three year investigation, he was arrested on drug charges in 2006. He has a radio talk show and has amassed a fortune exploiting the fears and prejudices of others.

Recently, he claims President Obama caused the recession on purpose:

Does this man have no shame?

Have you, sir, no sense of decency?

"Who is Obama? Why is he doing this? Why? Why is he doing it? Is he stupid? Is it an accident? Is he doing it on purpose or what have you? ... I think we face something we've never faced before in the country -- and that is, we're now governed by people who do not like the country, who do not have the same reverence for it that we do. Our greatest threat (and this is saying something) is internal... That word 'payback' is not mine, [but] it is exactly how I think Obama looks at the country: It's payback time... There's no question that payback is what this administration is all about, presiding over the decline of the United States of America, and doing so happily," - Rush Limbaugh

It's certainly working for the majority of blacks in this country. Look how economically prosperous they are!

If I were a republican, I'd tell him to stop playing the race card.... but that only works when YOU are the racist and want to hide behind a cliche.

While it is true that his being black was the cause of a lot of attention due to how historic it was, the reason he won ultimately, the reason people were voting for him, was not because of his ethnicity at all. It was because of his skills as a speaker and his incredibly uplifting message.

Obama would have never gotten the amount of media coverage that he got leading up to the primaries if he were white... but, uh, whatever.

dissapointing that you would say that. I don't see it.

Obama would have never gotten the amount of media coverage that he got leading up to the primaries if he were white... but, uh, whatever.

This is very true. Of course he wouldn't have gotten the same media attention.

All I know is that Obama would have had a much harder time organizing those communities in Chicago if he were white. And it seems to me that were he not black, a lot of blacks wouldn't have come out to vote for him in the primaries and Hillary could be president right now. And didn't he get selected to give that speech at the 2004 convention partly because he was a minority?

I think Oprah though is talented, isn't she? I think her success has a lot less to do with her race.

why is it your race, gender and sexual orientation are only questioned as an issue politically if you are not white straight men?

what about the polls that showed how many people voted against him ONLY because he was black?

Oprah is her own deal. She is a trailblazer and an anomaly.

LOL.... Apparently there are a vast majority of angry white people in this nation (surprise!) that will never believe a minority is capable of being on their level or better. Some people in this country never cease to amaze me.

To dismiss all that Obama has achieved in his life (on his own) to get him where he is today, on the mere fact that he is black is one of the most absurd things I've heard.

People who make accusations like that are not capable of having any level of sensitivity toward other races/ethnicities or a basic understanding of history.

They realize America is changing culturally and becoming more diverse. ... they can't stand the thought that one day this country will no longer be a "good ole boy" nation.

It also puzzles me how any minority group in this nation (gays, blacks, etc.) who on a daily basis feel what it's like to be a second class citizen, have the balls to discriminate against another minority group. Does this make sense to anyone else? You would think that even if they didn't agree on everything that there would be some level of respect that was understood.

For example: There are some gay people that say Obama is successful only because he is black. Are you serious? May I make the assumption that you are only successful because you are gay? How would it make you feel if you worked your ass off to be successful in life and some dumbshit comes along and makes a ridiculous statement (like the one above) that pays not mention to all your hard work? This shit is ridiculous.... and everyone knows it.

the black community is not fond of homsexuality as a moral issue, but the leaders usually do support the gay rights movement.

cultural issues battle political expediency between minorities.

interesting.

I had a professor that said in a lecture that the new minority is often given the hardest time by the other minority that has recently been accepted.

he pointed to the itallian/irish versus the african americans in the seventies as an example.

I never could decide if I agreed, but it is an interesting idea.

As for the gay community supporting the african american cause to protect their civil rights.... we can't even get organized to do it well for ourselves at this point, to be honest.

read some of the things that gay people say here at this site. Homophobia is rampant in the gay community. Also, you are assuming that just because gay people have simmilar sex, they also have similar political beliefs.

sadly there are alot of gay republicans out there helping the tools who are taking our rights away from us.

thats hard to swallow.

There has always been a group of Americans who have enjoyed "special rights".

It's the wealthy, white, heterosexual, Christian male. They're terrified of losing the power and authority they've had and don't want to share it with any other group. This group can also be described as conservatives. Keep women in the home, minorities in their place and homosexuals in the closet. For the Bible tells me so. Praise Jesus!

Oprah and President Obama are successful because they earned it.

(In response to cowboybob) I think the people you describe do exist, but I think they lack any significant influence in who the Republican party elects. In South Carolina which is one of the most conservative places they chose an Indian woman for the governor's ticket and a black for congress over the other white male candidates. You're not doing anyone any favors by promoting stereotypes, just as the people you describe don't do society any favors either.

The fact of the matter is that Obama received just a smidgen more attention than a generic white male democrat would have, and the attention from the media translated into free campaigning and votes. How many sensationalist stories were there about him being the first black president?? In all honesty, I don't care what color the man's skin is or anyone else's for that matter, but a lot of people do and you can't say that that didn't help him in life.

People who make accusations like that are not capable of having any level of sensitivity toward other races/ethnicities or a basic understanding of history.

But isn't it the point of post-racial America that we shouldn't have sensitivity to someone because of their race? How does it help the minorities to treat them specially? Shouldn't they be treated the same as the majority? It's like overcorrecting for past mistakes.

The only reason Rush is successful is that there are millions of idiot Republicans who want to believe whatever he says. Oh, excuse me, I was redundant with "idiot Republicans."

yeah.... this is about rush and his nonsense, not really Obama. Eventually a black man was going to get the big nod from one of the two parties. that guy made history, and I am sure that the press he got from that cut both ways.

Rush had a slow news day and went back to race baiting as a reliable tool for his listeners.

predictably.

I wonder if Rush would have been successful in his career pandering to racists and lowlifes if he weren't white.

(Actually, I don't.)

Obama would have never gotten the amount of media coverage that he got leading up to the primaries if he were white... but, uh, whatever.

do a think a white male senator would have gotten the same treatment and kid glove handling by the media? no, not really.

One strong Black Presidential candidate to win the White house and you talk as if the last 43 White presidential candidates got a RAW deal....So is that what History shows? White Male Politicians getting LESS Media coverage than Minorities?..During Obama's Presidential campaign ONLY 2 Black People were ever voted into the United States Senate...Today the record shows 3..In November the Senate will go back to having ZERO Blacks...

You sit there and act as if White candidates for the Senate have gotten a RAW deal for decades...

One thing about Obama's election is that it EXPOSES White Racists....Based on your posts I'm sure you voted against him because he's Black...

In all honesty, I don't care what color the man's skin is or anyone else's for that matter, but a lot of people do and you can't say that that didn't help him in life.

It might have helped in a few circumstances. Do you think it helped him more than it hurt him overall?
