I'm not down with the whole "pranking" phenom but what made me extremely uncomfortable was that a major political party is positioning her to be a heart beat away from the the presidency from a 72 y/o cancer survivor.

I'm British, so shouldn't really comment, but I'm not surprised she fell for it. Remember, George W Bush, like so many US politicians, knew very little about other countries and their leaders when he was first running, so it's unexceptional that a provincial like Mrs Palin should not know what the French President sounds like.
I have no problem with a creationist gun-lover running for office: the idiots who believe in creationism and twist the Constitution to claim they still have a right to bear arms deserve their own candidates, but apparently people are beginning to see through her initial image, and realise she is not ready.

Choosing Palin is such a politically manipulative move, slapping a personal, irrelevant face onto an issue that runs so much deeper than her experience or qualifications can possibly measure up to. This prank call just reinforces the fact that she's an idiot.
Ever heard of something called the Hawthorne Effect? It's the observation that people behave differently when they perceive they are being watched. Palin thought she was actually talking to Sarkozy in this conversation and revealed that she was incapable of having a professional conversation. Hats off to the comedian who did this. He is a true artist.
