I want to save the audio from YouTube clips, but I'm not sure how to do it. The only programs I've been successful with resulted in poor audio quality. I've tried using Audacity, but my laptop doesn't have the "stereo mix" audio option, which apparently I need. Any suggestions? :confused:

You using a Mac or Windows? If you are using Windows Vista then you can go into Recording devices, some laptops automatically by default turn off the Stereo Mixer. Right click on Recording Devices and have it show disconnected devices, if the stereo mixer is being displayed then you should have it just need to enable it.

Everyone's laptop is totally different so it might not be there at all that's how I got mine to work the first time I didn't know the device was disconnected but it was. Also I am not sure if this same method holds the same as Windows 7. If you do have Windows 7 try looking up Stereo Mixer Windows 7 to see if there are instructions to enable the Stereo Mixer.

When it came to YouTube audio I got my audio by downloading the YouTube file with Download Helper (Firefox), I saved it in either MP4 or FLV I can't remember which, I have Adobe Audition which is a little better than Audacity, but you can't beat free programs. Then I extracted the audio from a video and I could turn it into MP3 format.

Depending on how high the quality is if you are trying to extract the audio from an older YouTube clip you may end up getting poor sound quality. Its best to try to download from HQ18 or HQ35 quality but I end up getting a broken link when saving HQ35 videos.

Thanks for the info. I'm using Windows Vista. All of my devices are showing and I don't have Stereo Mixer, which apparently I need for Audacity. I've tried extracting from audio from FLV, but that doesn't work either, the files end up not playing. Hmmm, I'm not sure what to do, I may just keep fiddling with things!

If you want to screw around enough you can convert the saved video to AVI or WMV then drop it into Movie Maker, copy the audio to Audio/Music overlay and save it as an audio file.

Use the S.U.P.E.R. Converter (yes, that's actually the name)

It can convert almost every format into anything you need.
FLV -> mp3? No problem.

Have fun.

(Probably still not as good as a high quality mp3 from itunes, or a .flac that you ripped yourself. Just saying.)
