Scientists Claim They Found the Holy Grail of Superconductors

A superconductor at both room temperature and ambient pressure, the material called LK-99 shows promise—but fellow scientists are skeptical.

I can see why an article on superconductors dosen't really fit into a section for hot topics, it would be better off if there were a section called cold topics. Very very cold topics.
But seriously, the story shows again why science is the best. This research is still at the flaky stage but new ideas are always welcome and intelligent minds are always open. If this project ends up going nowhere, there will be no hissy fits, it's just back to the lab and try again, harder this time.
Why can't politics be more like science.

Perfect place to put it.

And so strangely coincidental that I was thinking about 'THE NEXT HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT' on this...because for years now...rather like hydrogen fuel, the accomplishments get murmured...then way over hyped by media and then all goes quiet again.

I remain hopeful that within my lifetime.....

It's got lead in it, so the fanatics will try to stop us having any products that might usefully utilise it.

I use lead/tin solder all the time. It is still legal for repair work and hobby electronics, and military applications.
Lead replacement additive allows modern fuel to be used on classic cars.
Modern paints are better than the old leaded ones anyway.

In all cases the unleaded is a poorer quality workaround. It sort-of works.

^ But oh it made for some gorgeous gilding of the domes of churches....

Did you mean to post it elsewhere on JUB?

I read the entire article. What I cannot get past is why any university or any scientist would publish before the work has been duplicated by an independent lab.

The loss of credibility and respect must be huge when these claims fall through. And it they are validated, then what was the cost of waiting?

Coz genuine science is not like music and sport, even like less like politics, it's not about winners and losers, it is the taking part. All research yields knowledge which, when freely shared, someone else might find useful in some unexpected way. A project that goes wrong is not a failure as long as you learn something from it.
Though Elon Musk has tested that principle to destruction, being an egotisical arsehole does not make one a scientist.

I don't see how that answers my question.

Sharing research does not necessitate making fantastical claims. The findings of these researchers could have been published under some less grasping claims. The lab could have also networked with a sister lab to corroborate some of the key points before publishing to a wider audience.

My point remains. This seems to be some grandiose claim made prematurely. It inherently has a big downside when credibility can jeopardize future funding or cause talent to go elsewhere.

The way I read it, the magazine was doing the sexing up of the story, because that's what magazines do. But if you are correct and it was the workers who were using the vacuum pump on their results, then your reaction is justified and I would agree with it.

The referenced article is here:

Not being familiar with the publishing styles of abstracts, it isn't clear how definitive the alleged claim is. The title clearly claims superconductivity, but the article clearly uses the word "possibility."

The irony is, this is a room-temperature superconductor, but featured in Hot Topics. I guess metta had a point.

I'll see myself out.
