Hey Guys,

Okay here is the thing. I recently got over a nasty case of mono and while I was stuck at home for about a month I got a tad bored and did something that I now view as very stupid.](*,) One day while showering I decided to go for a new look and I shaved my chest. Well I used one of those razors that have the 4 blades and I really made it a clean shave up and down (so yes I definitely at some point went against the grain). About 3-4 days after doing this I began developing small red bumps which sorta hurt when I touched them. Then by the end of a week they were ALL over my chest and resemble acne but I am thinking they have to be ingrown hairs because acne wouldn't just appear like that in such a large amount and plus the fact that this occurred right after shaving makes me think it isn't a coincidence. I take showers daily and so I gently scrub my chest to help exfoliate the skin. I also purchased a product called skin mend which should be arriving any day now, its a product designed for ingrown hairs and razor burn (I got it online). So anyway my question is...

It has been roughly about 2 weeks and although the bumps don't really hurt anymore they are still there and very noticeable. Has anyone else ever had this and how long will it take for them to go away.

I shouldn't laugh but I am. I haven't. But yes, others on her have. And yes, they are ingrown hairs. I don't know how long.

lol I don't care if you laugh but hopefully midst the laughter someone will be able to answer my question :D

It's exactly like shaving your beard. Going against the grain irritates the skin, and the best you can do is leave it alone. Scrubbing won't help, because it re-irritates the skin. I won't create more ingrown hairs, but it will inhibit healing.

So shower like normal, but don't scrub too hard on your chest. And lotion in between showers might help, like after-shave would after a real shave. Make sense?

It sounds like folliculitis.

What happens is that you have staph bacteria that live on your skin. When you shave an area that is not usually shaved, you create little cuts around the hairs. The staph bacteria get into the cuts and cause small areas of infection. It looks like pimples or the measles. I see them quite often on guys who shave their crotch or ass. The common names are "barber's itch" or "razor bumps"

Here's a picture:

Usually they go away after a few days. Since you're at two weeks and they have not gotten better, you need to see your doctor. You will probably need either some topical antibiotics or a course of oral antibiotics to clear it up.

A note on ingrown hairs - you can get these, especially if you have curly hair. They will also cause a folliculitis but usually people just get a few of them at a time- not the large number you've described. They tend to occur more around the beltline and the face, although I have seen them on the back and legs.

Lesson learned: clipper body hair or wax it- never shave it with a razor.

By the way- glad you're feeling better after your mono.

Thanks, I am feeling almost back to normal after my mono :-)

As far as what it is on my chest I looked at the picture of folliculitis and I looked it up online at other pictures and I dont really have bumps as large as the people in the pictures and most of them are just small and red...very few have white heads on them. I also noticed that it began on my lower chest and worked it's way up and the place where it started from isn't nearly as bad as it was in the beginning so I am going to use this product that I ordered for a few days and see what happens.

I'd suggest not shaving your chest anymore. If you want a clean look, use Nair. Be careful not to get burned though. It's powerful stuff. I use it on my butt every now and then and it works well. You just have to be really careful with it. It will give you a chemical burn if you leave it on too long or reapply to an area that already had some on it previously.

I don't think folliculitis has to have white heads ( if i remember correctly they can either rupture before you notice them or they just don't form the pustule), it can just be the little red bumps around the hair. And even if it was your first time shaving your chest and you had supper curly hair, i would think you would only get one, two, three ingrown hairs. And from what i remember of the ingrown hairs i've had they always get more annoying as time goes on. the hair continues to grow and piss off more skin until i would get a wicked looking pimple, which i would let rupture on its own and then tweeze the offending bastard hair.

I give another nod to the going to the doctor. They can give you something like bactroban cream or altabax cream to help kill off the evil bacteria invading you. If you want to keep shaving your chest because waxing costs to much. You could try using an Alpha/beta pad on the area, its a toner pad that has glycolic and sal. acid in it. It should help prevent any ingrown hairs. And then follow it with an application of something like Evoclin or BenzyClin to keep the bacteria in check.

But yea...go see a doctor!

Hair is beautiful!

Why on earth anyone would shave their body is beyond me.

Hair....yum!

Did the product you ordered arrive?

You said it was skin mend. It might be a knock off of a great product called Tend Skin, that's used to fight ingrown hairs.

Anyway, I'd like to know if you tried it.

Side note--when I was unemployed and had all the time in the world, I used tweezers to remove all my chest hair. No ingrown hairs with that method and no stubble, either.

Yea I will go to the Dr. cause I am tired of having these ugly red bumps. So on Monday I am going to call...

Ohh and yes the product was tend skin. But since these are not ingrown hairs I haven't used it yet.

Gosh, tweezing it!!!!???? Thats a lot of hair you're talking about. Go to a beauty salon and wax it! Atleast 2 weeks before you see stuble and even if, the stuble are much softer and doesn't annoys you as much as fucking shaving it.

Lots of laugh. They even have a numbing spray to numb it if you're afraid of pain. But....tweezing each and every one of those hair means you have had tooooo much time on your hand. hehehehe.

Okay well here's the scoop...

Turns out it is steroid induced acne. I may have irritated my skin by shaving but I am also breaking out on my face a little which isn't normal for me...but I am off the steroids now (today being the first day) so it should begin to clear up shortly.
