Ship hits Brooklyn Bridge

A Mexican Naval Academy sail training ship has crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.
Video shows the training ship traveling astern, the guide tug unable to intervene, the ship's tall mast collapses after striking the bridge.



It looks like the sail training crew were at mast stations when their vessel hit the Brooklyn Bridge.
Crew on tall masts must be tethered for safety and this video shows how the crew harnesses save lives.

Sympathies go to the dead and their families. How very sad.

The command staff of the training ship will have to fully explain to New York Maritime authorities the decision to leave dock in the evening with strong river tides flowing northward in the direction of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. In the morning, the East River flows southward toward the ocean. Tide flow charts are usually referenced for scheduling departures for non-commercial vessels.
 
It's just horrific. The crew on those tall ships are usually young, and honored to be selected even to a junior post. The idea that they were killed needlessly, likely aloft and struck fatally, is beyond irresponsible. The pilot knew when they lost power that the bridge was near. He or she should have immediately ordereed them down. Imagine their parents' shock and grief.
 
They had almost five minutes from the time the tug pulled the ship out of the berth into the channel, and started drifting backwards. FIVE MINUTES that the pilot did not take command and give the order to get the kids down off the top rigging. Even two minutes should have been enough to get down.

Pressure is building as the sail training ship appeared to be running astern under power. Two cadets paid with their lives for this "loss of power" and if the NTSB wants to go by the book, local NYC authorities better take the gloves off on behalf of the two grieving families.


Yes, the clock is ticking for answers.

 
I pray it is not some young crew member having done something wrong at the helm or on some other key action that killed them. It will be horrible if so.
 
Well, that's all folks - until the NTSB is ready to report any new findings. All my favorite YT channels have gone quiet, for now.

Sal over at "What's Going On With Shipping" is asking if the Sail Training ship's control panel was displaying "Ahead" while the was going "Astern", because of CPP.
CPP spins the propeller in only one direction but allows for forward and reverse without a driveshaft transmission.

So far there's a general agreement that the Naval training ship needed a tug to pull away from the dock. The ship was being operated by a local harbormaster per regulations for traffic in the East River, the ship's command staff was not in charge during undocking.

The harbormaster released the tow line from undocking tug boat too soon!

Without a line connection to the tug the river current begins to carry the ship northward towards the bridge. When the ship's engine is engaged, the direction indicator incorrectly reads "forward" the whole time the ship is actually powered astern.

Well, that's a summary of what I'm hearing from various sources. Who knows how long it will take to the truth to be revealed.
