Saturday night a pregnant woman was shot to death outside a Wawa convenience store.
I don't know the people involved, but I know the store well. It's 2.4 miles from my home but on a bus line, near a trolley line, and across from a library. When I was working I'd go there to meet to carpool to work.
I've never felt unsafe there at any hour. But now?

Sorry to hear that. It is getting so that it isn't safe anywhere. Also sorry for the deceased woman and her family.

A quick Google brought up the following factoid "In 2021, 76% of female murders and 56% of male murders were committed by someone known to the victim". Be careful in your choice of friends.

America is a gun.

But the statistical probability of you being shot going to that convenience store will be ridiculously low.

We had our share of a few murder cases growing up in a nice Bergen County town in the 1970s.

Drug addict killed one of our neighbors.

And two teen brother strangled a girl for not performing oral sex on then down by the Passaic river.

I'm oblivious today what the stats are in my area.

Yes, I know. But it's still a shock.
You simply have to remind yourself every day not to succumb and live in perpetual fear, although it seems that is what the NRA, the US courts and the 24 hour media want people to do.

You probably have a greater risk as a child attending school of being mowed down now than being shot in your hood.

That's scary to know that it was near you 😯
