Okay I work at Fry's Electronics, currently it is clearance time and we got a steal on a laptop. Should I buy it?

15.4 inch Macbook Pro
Model Number MB075LL/A

Here is the thing, I ain't a Mac Fan, and Windows is definately going on this machine (and maybe I will retry linux once again, but that is a maybe). Thing is I don't need another computer, I just recently bought a Quad Core, and I have my minature ASUS EEE which I love.

Yet with this baby I can game on the go...

For $1399 I know this laptop is a steal (for a brand new model), but should I do it? For gaming purposes the only thing that comes close to this model is some of the gaming toshiba models with dual 8600 but those go for $1949 are 17 inch, heavy, and get crap battery life. The very opposite of this laptop.

I want to get a gaming laptop eventually, but I am wondering do I really need it?

---
The only downside of this model is that it is using 10.4 instead of 10.5 (big deal to me for I ain't a Mac OS fan), and that is an older model thus clearance (big deal for there was a huge price drop and this thing is still state of the art)
---

And no I won't ebay it, or buy it to sell again.

Spec wise it is a steal, I know (I sell computers after all)...

but do I really need it?

YES.

I HAVE A MACBOOK PRO IT'S GREAT! The Touch functions and iSight Camera are fun too. BUT IT IS GREAT FOR GAMING. Also some games you can get for Mac.

I got Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Halo for Mac.

All fun. What I like about Unreal is you usually use right click to do secondary weapon. On the mac you just hold down command and click which is easier then right click IMO. And you can still do online gaming.

As for PC side of gaming on mac. I use VMWare. I have gotten Worms World Party to work by mounting the ISO file.

I just can't get sonic adventure to work. What I have to do with that is use boot camp. VMWare is great for switching between windows and mac and sending files but there might be a program or game or two that boot camp would be useful for. But to do bootcamp you need the software installation disc for windows xp, vista, linux or w/e.

I haven't tried UT3 on Vmware yet. But I will. That will be the game that really tests the gaming power of the mac since that doesn't work on even my vostro desktop :(

But I heard you need to shitty Vista Update for that.

No, you can get a desktop that is at least twice as powerful for the same price.

if you are serious about pc gaming, buy a desktop PC

if you're going to use it for gaming, why do you care if it has tiger or leopard? just install win xp and you'll be fine.

on a technical note: don't totally wipe out whatever osx install it has. there were some problems with wifi/kernel panicing on the 2nd gen macbook pros (which that one is) and only the apple updates fixed it.

you'll have to use that apple update to get it and the efi up to snuff.

I don't plan on using OS X much, so it doesn't really matter leopard or tiger.

And no I won't wipe the OS completely, instead doing a dual boot.

Seems expensive to me! I realize that this is a Mac, but you can get a similarly spec'd Windows notebook for less than half that!

How about no, those specs don't compare at all, I sell computers for a living I should know.

First the 5450 is a basic office processor, it runs at 1.66 ghz instead of 2.4 ghz; Has a 667 fsb instead of 800, and only a 2 meg cache instead of a 4 meg cache.

This means the processor is at least 40% faster and is closer to 50%. Also can take advantage of faster ram.

Second and far more importantly, your computer is lacking a video card. This is a big deal in gaming. My computer pretty much has the best mobile graphic card on the market right now (besides 1 or 2 very expensive models), without putting a desktop graphic card in which will suck power faster than a ... and defeat the entire purpose of a portable laptop. I will not get a desktop replacement, if I wanted that I will stick with my desktop which is a better computer, but you don't need the best when you want portability.

honestly, with the way technology is evolving, if you don't need it don't get it. in 1 year, you will get something 1000x better.

If I were you, I would buy it and than ship it to yourself (which in the case that I was you and you were me would mean that you would actually be shipping it to me)

;)

No, seriously.

bought the laptop, will install xp on it this weekend. So far I been excited.

Ironically one of the cashiers came out ot me when I was buying the laptop. He told me his boyfriend loves his macbook pro, or save up and spend 3 grand on a gateway fx laptop.

Sadly the cashier wasn't cute at all, and I didn't think he got the indirect but very obvious comment I made that I was queer too, for it seem to sail right over his head.

I think apple's new OS includes the updated version of bootcamp. Can you tell me if the touchpad recognizes a finger tap as a click, opposed to using the actual button? Thanks.

Wow, that's a great price! I wouldn't get it, though, only cuz the next laptop I get will be a super-portable laptop like the Sony TZ series or Lenovo X series.

You can get a lenovo T61p on their website with better specs at that price:

T9300 processor (2.5GHz, 800MHz, 6MBL2)

3GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz ram

NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL)

WSXGA+: Widescreen Super eXtended Graphics Array Plus
Resolution: 1680×1050

Only 80Gb HDD, though

My friend just got one with Vista Ultimate 64 and a WUSGA+ screen. The renderings for his 3D modeling software are insane, much better than on the computers we have at school.

make sure the have atleast the efi update 1.2 so that you can boot off the windows cd; a second gen mac like that probably has been sitting on the shelf and hasn't been updated.

when you get to os update 10.4.10, be sure to upgrade wifi driver right away, or else you're run into kernel panics when you're running on battery and wifi at the same time.
