Should I get HPV vaccine? I'm 21 with first boyfriend

So as a 21 year old, I'm about to enter my first serious relationship with my boyfriend. I've messed around in the past. I've given BJ's to about 8 different guys in the past as a one-night type thing. Never met up with them again.

I'm clear for all major STD's and so is my boyfriend (we got tested). However, I'm thinking it might be in my best interest to get the HPV vaccine but obviously I would have to wait 6 months until I can blow him, makeout with him, or rim him (or vice versa). Should I make us wait for 6 months? It's only one more to add to my tally, so what difference will one more guy make? He's gotten blown by over a total of 10 guys and girls in the past. I really want to give him a BJ, but I'm nervous I will get mouth or throat cancer one day thanks to HPV.

Help! I don't know what to do and I don't want to break up with him over this!

Sorry to double post, but I wanted to clear up that the last guy I've blown was over a year ago. Since then I've wanted to change my ways. I can't change the past, but I would like to do what I can for the future. The question would be if it's worth it to get that vaccine for just one more guy.

You should discuss it with your doctor. The guidelines say that the 3 shots in the HPV series should be given before any sexual activity (generally in the pre-teen years) however there is no contraindication to giving it to someone who is already sexually active.

I already know my doctor would say I should take it because that's his job to keep me as safe as possible. I don't think he really understands HPV well enough anyway to make a sound decision for me. I can't go back in time and take the shot before having sexual activity, so... I guess I'm just doomed either way.

The question is not whether you should have the shots. The answer is yes. The question is whether you have sex in the following 6 months and hope you are not exposed to HPV. Only you can answer that question, but you should have the shots. You have nothing to lose by having the shots, except the expense, and they will protect you for life if you do not contract the disease during the initial period. I suggest you also receive the Hepatitis vaccine as well..

There is some information that he should discuss with you- like for example, that you're past the recommended age and you're already sexually active in an age group in which you've probably been exposed to some strains of HPV. There are also some risks associated with the shots in a small percentage of people who get them.

And just to set a realistic expectation: the shots only protect against a limited number of the over 100 strains of HPV (the newest version of Gardasil contains only 9 strains). The purpose of the shots is not to protect you against HPV; it's to protect against cancer that is caused by the riskiest strains of HPV.

You will get HPV if you are sexually active- most of the people in your age group have been infected with at least one strain of HPV. The vaccine will benefit you in protecting you against the riskiest strains but only if you not been exposed already. Hopefully you have not been exposed to the 9 strains that are in the vaccine but there's not an easy way to determine if you have already been exposed.

The shots are about $150-200 for each shot, so it will cost you about $500 for all three doses.

I agree! I told my doctor I was having sex with multiple sex partners. He suggested the hepatitis vaccine. I was give three injections of Twinrix over a period of three months.
