Shyamalan to direct Avatar: The Last Airbender film

Doom. I used to admire S. Since The Village, I am lost for words for that guy.

Hmm... I find myself less than enthused that they are making a live action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, much less who may or may not direct it.

Shyamalan Planning a Different Avatar

According to Variety, M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount are planning their own "Avatar" project, based on the popular Nickelodoen kids TV series.

The filmmaker has signed a three-picture deal with Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies to adapt the animated children's series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" for the big screen. He will write, direct and produce the potential kids franchise. The film version will be live-action.

Nick TV's "Avatar" follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. The show was created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The trade adds that Paramount confirmed the deal with Shyamalan just hours after 20th Century Fox announced it has given the green light to James Cameron's Avatar.

Although they may have the same name, the two projects have nothing to do with each other in terms of storylines. Cameron's is a sci-fi action-adventure that he's been working on for 11 years.

Paramount said it has registered the name of its project with the Motion Picture Association of America. A Fox rep said, "We own the movie title 'Avatar.' There won't be another film called 'Avatar' coming from anyplace."

I'm cautiously pessimistic. I don't think a live action Avatar will have the same charm. I mean part of the fun comes from the over the top antics of Aang, somthing you can't really do with an actor. Don't even get me started on having different voices. It's bad enough we tragically lost Uncle Iroh's voice actor, Mako.

Or rape it up like Disney's doing with Bridge to Terabithia.

I don't know if I'd wanna see this.... The show is just fine being animated, and I think it's a rather BAD idea to go live-action.

Hmmm, I am excited to see the movie. I mean I dont think they can do all the amazing things like in the cartoon show, but live action will look awsome in my opinion. I am sad that it wont be coming out until 2009, but hey by then, maybe CGI will be so good, we notice less that the special effects have a clay-like appeal to them.

Well, he proved with Lady In The Water that he can write movies on the level that only children can enjoy. Unfortunately, that's wasn't his intention with that movie.

Shyamalan started his career so well and has just gone downhill FAST. The The Village was bad and Lady In The Water was ridiculous. At least with Avatar, it's not his original idea.
