This morning I discovered...right before leaving for work, that we had a leak at the junction between the sink and the drainpipe...that has obviously been leaking for some time. Quietly.

Through the plank flooring down into the basement...into a chest where we keep stuff.

Like Life Magazines from 1949 to 1970's and my 60 year old Kenner Erector set and manuals.

All of which are saturated and growing mildew and mold.

So out they have gone (the box for the Erector set, not the whole set).

It is the curse of keeping so much stuff. But I am a little sad, because my great nephews are just near the age I could have given the erector set to them and I had been looking around to see if anyone wanted a complete set of Life magazines from those years.

And now I have to get rid of the mold and mildew that has also infected the chest.

The Good news? All the newspapers that highlighted the great events from the death of King George to Watergate are still intact. Now. What to do with them?

Have you lost shit like this? And wondered why you kept it at all? And then been sad when it was destroyed?

That's a bummer. :( Thankfully, I have not had that happen to me. The stuff you don't want anymore that is really old, have you considered seeing if you can sell them to an antique store? That way you won't need to worry about them.

I have accumulated too much.

We were planning on letting the great nephews have a good time going through it someday...but tomorrow when I have dinner with their parents I will ask whether they would prefer we just get rid of everything else that is left.

It's a different kind of erector set that I could do with these days.
Things are just things, they link in to happy memories but the memories are still there, you can access them without the junk. Sweetiepie and me are complete opposites, he wants to keep everything, I want to keep nothing. He always wins of course.

I lost all of my childhood memorabilia (mostly photographs) and artwork in a basement flood in the early 90's. A lot of other stuff got ruined but it was replaceable.

. . my great nephews are just near the age I could have given the erector set to them . .
nephew: (puts phone down and takes erector set box) Does it have wifi?
rareboy: What? No! Better yet, it doesn't need wifi! It's powered by your imagination!
nephew: (scoffs) My generation has no imagination. We don't need it. (tosses box aside and gets back on phone)
