Sir Elton John urges next election winner to eradicate AIDS by 2030

I applaud his work, but that article was a bit of fluff. It quoted a sound bite without giving any news at all about how such an outrageous claim could be credible, either in the UK, or globally.

This isn't like guinea worm or river blindness that is primarily caused by poverty and is regional, even if affecting millions.

AIDS is worldwide, like smallpox or turberculosis.

Any claim to eradicate ANY existing disease should be seen for what it is, gross hyperbole, as the more pernicious spread of mental illness regarding vaccines and the "rights" to be exempted from medical care spreads.

Even the previous suppressed diseases like measles are returning thanks to the paranoia that has taken hold of lazy or peevish brains across the West.

AIDS being a sexually transmitted disesase is even less likely to be "eradicated" due to the inherent problem of libertine attitudes as well as stigma and denial.

Mr. John is to be applauded for working on the issue, but the initiative would have perhaps more coverage if he used a tinge of realism in his blurbs.

Smallpox was eradicated globally because an effective vaccine was developed. Until there's an HIV vaccine, all we can hope for is better detection and treatment.

I agree that the only way to eradicate it is via mass vaccination. While the West has rightly reduced the incidence the worst number of cases are in Third World countries where education and medical care are sparse.

Gather 'round everybody! A celebrity! A celebrity has spoken! Oh the glitter! The virtue! The redundancy! My god I've just pissed myself!

Ronald Reagan
Donald Trump
Arnold Schwarzenegger
. . . .

Apparently, people love celebrities enough to vote them in to public offices.

In some ways, I think Trump was actually an ideal candidate. I increasingly feel that when I follow news about government it is like watching a bad reality TV show, and who better to head it than a reality TV show host?

On a more serious level, I suppose celebrities have a possible advantage when running for office in that they have name recognition value.

I don't follow political news that closely, but I probably have paid more attention than many people. Even so, there are people (if a politician can be called a person  ) in every major election cycle whom I don't really know much about. I can see people who pay less attention than I do liking the idea of someone whose name they know.

I doubt there ever will be one. On a realsitic level, I think virus mutation would be a problem. Secondly, cynically, I don't think big pharma would be interested in developing that product even if they could. Too much money to be made off drugs to manage HIV. The only way they'd like a vaccine is if it could be one that the users would take repeatedly. (This would also fit the practical issue of virus mutations.)

The problem with that thinking is that it's kind of like a spray that kills 99% of germs. The 1% that survives then becomes the superbug that kills all.

The 3rd world does have the greatest need, but that doesn't change the growing spread of ignorance and resistance to treatments in the developed world.

What's really tragic is there's a way to make that disease go away for good. But it involves everybody being a willing participant in eradicating this disease.

The next time you have sex, make sure it's clean that is there is no back and forth with the condom then after your partner cums, fill the condom with water and look for any leakages.

I feel HIV is all a big scam. Even condom companies are saying that condoms don't guarantee pregnancy prevention and HIV infection.

And the people infected with HIV, especially in third world countries seem to be drug users. Regions with high intravenous drug use will have a serious hiv/aids problem. Prostitutes were infected with HIV probably because their clients were drug users than bisexual men. The virus is supposedly low-risk sexually except for anal sex which not all gay men engage in anyway because a vast number are sides and these days, anal sex is not restricted in heteroplay so why is it called gay sex anyway?

Even the aids epidemic took off because many gay communities especially in NYC and other urban areas were having chemsex parties with the use of drugs and risky sexual behavior as engaging in sex with multiple random partners.

So why is hiv associated with gay men? Quite sure there are as many heterosexual people infected with the virus. The women without a drug history, for example, probably got the virus from men.

Therefore, I urge gay men to abstain from unhealthy polygamous lifestyle and pursue a life of monogamy which only our community can provide for us by supporting one another.
