I just saw the 1993 movie, Six Degrees of Separation in full and it is a masterpiece. It shows how good Will Smith really is. It's a movie about what wealthy people think of themselves and their own identities and how they essentially live in their own bubble where they are protected from the real world. It's a really fascinating premise and it will haunt me forever. There are some bare asses in it and Will kisses other men in this movie as well as scenes that imply he had sex. But of course the fact that his character is gay does not define him; it's almost like an after thought. To all those who haven't seen this movie, please see it and those who have seen it, please share your thoughts on it. I'd love to hear them. I think the movie is a great example of to be a person who is black and gay and poor, which are like three strikes against a person living in the United States of America. The movie shows why good manners can be very helpful and influential when used correctly.

That is one damned fine movie.
And yeah, netflixs does have it.

The first time I saw it I was floored..... Will Smith plays an absolutely handsome and charming character.... but it even gets more interesting once you get to the background of his life.

One of the best movies I've seen.... I wish it would have ended differently... but we cannot always have happy endings.

Unfortunately, Denzel Washington advised Will not to do a gay kiss in the film. Apparently, according to Denzel, black people see their actors as heroes, and kissing another man in a film isn't very heroic.

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

Yeah, it's confirmed. Will said it in an interview with Premiere magazine. Will later said if he had to do it all over again, he would've done the kiss.

Funny this topic comes up because I'm watching a Noah's Arc marathon on LOGO, first time I've watched the network since they canceled the show, and one of the character mentioned Will playing gay and I could not for the life of me recall ever seeing it.

Now not only do I know it happened, but I know what movie as well.

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

Stockard Channing's monologue was the best thing in that movie.

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

FYI, the the movie was first a Broadway play, and that was based on a true story about a guy named David Hampton. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hampton

The story is about a con artist who scammed people out of money and trust, and is not about what it is "to be a person who is black and gay and poor" in America.

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

^He didn't say that's what it was about, he said it was an example of being black, gay, and poor.

Talk about your Six Degrees: I knew Professor Iselin when he was President of the Cooper Union, as I was heavily involved with their fund-raising at the time. I once asked him why he remained in the Social Register knowing full well that people could easily come looking for him and he laughed without any worry.

It takes a strong personality to be exposed to something like that as an intellectual, then become president of one of the most intellectual schools in the country, and still feel no insecurity about it. This man knew who he was, and did not allow anyone else to identify him. Particularly not some little con artist who, from what I remember, was quite familiar with the West-side piers in his day...

Coming from his background (VERY old family WASP, descendant of John Jay as well as Livingstons, Stuyvesants, Schuylers...there are very few of such men alive today - he sadly is no longer one of them), one would expect him to have reacted negatively to having been exposed at all, but to those of us whom he knew, he did not. Quite remarkable, really. He impressed me immensely.

Oh, and I've seen the movie. The writers were very kind to the sleaze who perpetrated this hoax. He was disgusting and crude, and even people who met him said that they would not have fallen for it were it not for the fact that they didn't know Sidney Poitier, or anyone who did, and did not want to look as though they were not acquainted with black people. But his actions gave him away right away. These people know their own.

They just figured neither Sidney Poitier nor his "son" was one of their own...

Read into that what you will...

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

I enjoyed the movie when it first came out, but it was very "theatrical." It semed very much like a filmed play rather than a film.

And yes I remember the whole Denzel/Will story.

I never said the movie was all about being gay and black in America. I said that it is a topic that comes up and Will Smith's character is an example of it. I already said that his sexuality was an after thought and not a main theme. Please read what I wrote, thank you.
And thank you Sunof the Skye for understanding what I wrote. :D

Re: Six Degrees of Separation Will Smith plays gay

As soon as I seen the title, I thought back to the movie, couldn't remember the name, but I remembered that he was a sorta 'con-artist' and gay.

damn... it's been awhile.
