Sleeping issues

The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is getting enough sunlight. You could get one of those lamps that simulate sunlight if you have an aversion to the outdoors.

Have you ever been able to sleep a full night? Could there be a cycle, such as seasons or moon phases? North/south orientation of your body when you sleep?

They never took me to the doc when I was younger, simply because it didn't start affecting me during the day until relatively recently. The one time I did mention it to a doc, he just gave me a week's worth of sleeping pills. :(

(((((((((((((That is what they are famous for. some dont even look at you before thety write their prescriptions!!

I've had so many bad experiences with doctors that these days I'm afraid I'd rather saw my foot off than see one. Seriously.

)))))))))))Oh boy, do i KNOW what you mean. I am exactly the same. I just do not trust them.

As for the CD's - I'm sure you find them relaxing, but I have my doubts. ANY noise in the house AT ALL will keep me awake, even stuff that is supposedly "relaxing". Yes, you hear the voice of experience there :(

I forgot to mention. These Hemi Sync CDs. The best way to really get the benefit is to use a personal CD playey. Why? because--if you chekout their site they'll explain this better--the sound is desgned so that it is your own mind which creates the relaxation stimulus. And for this to happen the sound has to go directly into each ear. All I can do is recommend you at least give it a go, before you dismiss it.

I'm in an office under flourescent lghting for nine hours a day :( This time of year I don't see daylight from sunset on sunday until noon on Friday.

But this has been going on for a lot longer than I've been working there.

I have slept a full night, at normal hours, but it's usually been after a run of exceptionally bad nights. Under normal circumstances, no.

Sometimes if I don't have to get up in the morning (ie at weekends) I'll stay in bed until about 10AM. - which works out at a full night's sleep, just time-shifted by three hours. But it doesn't always happen (I'm usually awake by eight even if I don't have to be) and during the week, when I have to get up at six, it's just impossible.

I'm not dismissing it out of hand, I'm sure they do help people. I'm just telling you how my body works. And I'm afraid that they definitely won't help me if I have to wear headphones - I find the damn things UNBELIEVABLY irritating.

but you can get so many differnt types, and you dont have to wear them all the time. IF you were as desperate as you seem, surely you'd be more willing to try solutions to your problems.....?

oh man, I can relate to this. Mine only started recently but boy it has been annoying.

Nothing worse than not being able to fall asleep or not getting many hours.

Especially frustrating when sleeping use to be so easy. I would honestly place my head on the bed and within 2 minutes I would be out.

and Valerian 2400mg, that seems like a lot..how much difference do those make? I have one here that is 300mg?

I too have had insomnia for the better half of my life.

Routine is absolutely key. Go to bed at the same time, or close to it, EVERY night.
Wake up at the same time, or close to it, EVERY morning. Including weekends. Make a sleep journal recording the times you go to sleep and the times you wake. If there is an anomaly in the routine, your sleep routine suffers.

Train your body that your bed is only for sleep and sex. Do not read in bed, do not write in bed, do not watch TV in bed. Bed is for sleep and sex.

If you cannot fall asleep within 30 minutes, get up. Get out of your bed and do something low-key. I would recommend watching tv at a low volume. Something that isn't physical, something that isn't mentally strenuous.

My type of insomnia has to do with being less inclined to sleep in my own bed. I can generally fall asleep much faster, and much easier if i were to sleep on the couch for the night or use the guest room.

As for the TV and radio thing, she has a good point, but there are better 'noise machines' my pick is a small fan on the medium setting. I like a fan over TV because there are no sharp unexpected sounds, it's all the same doesn't change.

Also I've read somewhere that sleeping with your head facing north is supposed to help you sleep, never tried it... sounds somewhat unnecessary but desperate times eh?

Hope this helps
