Hi, I'm just wondering if I can have some tips to make my computer faster? In the last year, it has just been much slower and I cracked today - I want/need to clean it up and increase its speed somehow. I am having trouble uploading photos onto Facebook.

What do you all suggest?

Thanks

1. Defrag the hard drive
2. Stop programs you dont need from opening on start-up
3. Clean out the cache, history and temp files
4. Consider a memory upgrade, memory is cheap and easy to install

It would help to know what type of machine and operating system you are using.

Hey thanks,

I'm using a Dell Dimension 8300 with Windows XP Home Edition S.P. 2

It's been a while since I've had XP so bear with me. Click on start then click on run, type in msconfig and hit enter. You will get a box with several tabs, click on startup and a list of all programs that run on start up will open. Un-check anything you know that you do not need to run at start up such as any instant messaging programs, media players, etc. Do not un-check anything that you aren't sure what it is. When you are done click apply then ok. You will probablly have to re-boot. When the computer starts up again you will get a message telling you that some programs have been deactivated or some such message, you can click the small box so the the message will not appear every time you start up the computer.

Also, upgrading your memory if it is less then 1gig is a good idea if you run alot of programs at the same time.

If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

I would also run some spyware programs and anti virus programs just in case.

ad aware
spybot search & destroy
avg anti virus

Hi, download ccleaner ( no its not a spelling mistake ) It's a small program that will clean up the crap from your computer that's slowing it down. It's a short tutorial and so east to use and will take out loads of junk you didn't know was there. I use it weekly and it's great. But also follow the advice above, as well, cause if you have malware/spyware etc it can do a lot of harm.

Hi, you may have guessed that it is a computer that has a few years behind it. How do I upgrade to more RAM to speed it up? I have:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Dell DIMENSION 8300
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99GHz, 512 MB of RAM

I have done the following already that were suggested by all of you:

1. Sort out my start-up programs
2. Run:
- Adaware
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- AVG Anti-Virus
- CCleaner

Thanks for all your help.

Well, if it's not a Mac, it is understandable why it would have problems.

people like you are so HELPFULL in this forum. Not that you are an opinionated jerk or anything.....

Thanks getstoseven, I shall PM you if that's OK with help on how to do this and the tech behind it all. Great, cheers.

I always recommend cleaning off a PC and starting from scratch every six months or so or at least every year. It accumulates an awful lot of crap and not just spyware etc. - stuff like installed and uninstalled apps that are badly written leave a lot of junk behind that slow down your PC. Remember before you do anything (including installing new RAM) always have a full backup made - Murphy's Law is the real deal :D

Yep. He said it. Words to live by.

Thanks Noelie, could you provide me with rough assistance on how to do this - as in cleaning your PC? Cheers.

So if I up my RAM to at least 1GB, hopefully a difference shall be noticed? How does one go about upgrading one's RAM? Can I do it solely over the internet, or do I have to go to a computer store and buy RAM, or something else? Is it easy to increase RAM on your computer?

I haven't totally wiped my drive and reinstalled for about 2 years now. I think I'm due to spend the 8 hours... Always seems to do wonders.

What do I need to back up though? I'd be far too scared to do something like that. I have about 400GB spare on my external HDD. I'd be scared to wipe my drive.
