I went to the website and it's saying the next new episode is March 12?! I love Smallville, but they're really wearing me slick. They already took a winter break and now, after only a few episodes have aired again, they're taking a month break. I hope this isn't a sign that the show isn't doing well...

Am I missing something?

The show is doing well. In fact, the CW is trying to negotiate with Tom Welling to return next season for year #9. That means the network is backing up a big brinks truck to his front door.

The current hiatus is not that uncommon. They've already aired 14 episodes so far in season #8. Usually, they produce only 22 (sometimes 24) new episodes, which means the remaining approximately 8-10 shows must be dragged out until the week before Memorial Day to cover the entire season. This is a common occurence...for example, Desperate Housewives will be airing their 15th episode this Sunday, but in March, they'll primarily be in re-runs when Smallville is back with fresh epsidoes.

The original plan was for the CW to air 18 epis this season to let the show finish since the strike shortened its season last year. Have read nothing official about a season nine or any changes to the plans that had been made. Tom is looking way too long in the tooth to be believable as early 20's anymore anyway.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reported in early January that the only thing holding up a season 9 was the signing of Tom Welling. He said that they were close and just had a few details to work out. Last week, he said a deal still had not been finalized yet, but the network was proceeding with signing other cast members, so that it looked good.

However, there is one negative indicator for a potential 9th season. The CW is talking to Smallville's show-runners Darren Swimmer and Todd Slarkin about helping launch this fall's new "Melrose Place 2.0" program. So, we must wait and see.

Meanwhile, in regards to season 8, kryptonsite says we will have 22 episodes. Here are the dates:

#15 -- March 12
#16 -- March 19
#17 -- March 26
#18 -- April 2
#19 -- April 23
#20 -- April 30
#21 -- May 7
#22 -- May 14
