Fisrt thing I want to say is that I am a non smoker.I have never somked, and that means anything. But I do not live with my head up my ass concerning the effects of smoking verses other health,and moral valuse in this world.If all the people in the world including our government would jump on the band wagon against all the other health problems and addictions like they have smoking, maybe some things may change. Alcohol comercials were taken off tv,but have slowly began to creep back on.I have noticed a lot as of late and I do mean during prime time.I am sure cig smoking isnt good for ones health but there are sure as hell a lot worse out there that no one wants to complain about.I was in a convieance store a week or so ago a female came in and promplty announced out loud that she smelled smoke, you would have thought she had inhaled a toxic killer gas of some type, she even pulled her sweater up over her mouth and nose as some type of protection. Get this....she then goes to the cooler and gets a bolltle of wine and as she was paying still in her panic state from smoke inhalation she ask for a pack of rolling papers. The clerk very nicely tells her they were out. The lady became very upset,she even dropped her shield of protection (her sweater she was using) to curse him out for not having her drug supply.What a stupid bitch.As for myself I had rather see and be around a smoker than a drunk or someone stoned out of thier head on drugs. I have been around women including two I work with that are so stoned on prescription meds like valume , and other drugs that they barley can funtion.One of them has been sent home from work absolutley stoned even foaming from the corners of the mouth . And I bet the doctor who prescribes all this shit would blame every illness known to man on a cig. No matter what anyone says cig are not the killer they try to make it out to be.If a person is unstable in any mental type way cig do infuse those emotions to a deadly situation as drugs or alcohol might would.I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A PERSOIN KILLING FOR A CIG but I have for drugs or drug money,I have heard of murders due to alcohol or related to alcohol.I know there are many things connected to smoking as a health factor,but if you take all the things related to drugs and alcohol and compare you would be surprised.Im talking about the murders,rapes,child beatings ,child molestaions,wife beatings ,car crashes,thefts and the list goes on in which alcohol or drugs were related. cigs just might not look or be that bad.

Smoking is targeted for a number of reasons:

1. it was/is widespread;
2. the harmful physical effects of smoking impact upon non-smokers as well;
3. lung cancer is the 3rd leading cause of death; and
4. smoking is associated with an increased rate of almost all chronic diseases including renal disease, diabetes and its complications, and hypertension.

It is most cost effective to target smoking as opposed to drugs and alcohol. Further to this, it has been shown that a reduction in the smoking rate of a population has led to decreased rates of lung cancer.

Alcohol is a difficult issue because it is far more socially accepted and in actual fact only 15% of the population drinks at a harmful or hazardous pattern and 5% are dependent.

The actual complications developed from alcohol abuse, such as liver cirrhosis, diabetes and brain damage are not leading causes of death or morbidity and are therefore not major targets for public health campaigns.

alcohol affects almost every family in the us in some way.as do drugs and they are both very wide spread. the harmful phisical affects do affect many others around them. such as a drunk killing someone you love in a wreck or battering a loved one.drugs are linked to many,many diseases as alcohol is too. my sister is a nurse in a large hospital on a maternity ward. she was just talking the other day about how many babies they are seeing born with addictions to drugs and with birth defects.your statistics sound good, but doesnt mean jack shit.

lol.....lol....and now dont you smoke a cig ,but you can buy all those energy drinks and pills over the counter thats hyping you up with caffine and who knows what else. all those drinks and pills are to increase you heart rate and thin the blood and to make you as nervous as a dog shitting razor blades..lol...lol

I sure haven't! I don't watch any sports. I'm ](*,) trying to think of any alcohol commercials, but I can't. Guess I need to pay more attention to ads.

First off... this is a no flame zone and this strongly borders on it as does your subsequent post.

Secondly, decaf's post is pretty much right on as to an answer to your question. That's not to say that drugs and alcohol aren't a problem. But everybody who smokes is endangering their health as well as the health of those around them. Not everybody who drinks or uses drugs (depending on the dose and type of drug of course) is putting themselves at risk. In fact, small doses of alcohol appear to have a beneficial effect on health. That definitely can't be said about smoking.

On a widespread scale, the best thing you can do for your health is 1)exercise and 2) not smoke. The secrets to a long life imo.

scorpionljb, I think you'll find that statistics do mean 'jack shit'. They are what public health programs are modelled on.

The fundamental basis of public health is that it protects and promotes health for the majority.

I agree that more needs to be done to address alcohol and drug issues but even though as you say, "a drunk killing someone you love in a wreck" still does not have a significant enough incidence rate to warrant health campaigns to focus more on alcohol than on smoking.

Also, I'm sure your sister would be able to tell you all the harmful effects of smoking on babies.

I am a former smoker. I enjoyed my last cigarette three years ago this coming New Year's eve. I would love to start smoking again but probably won't for a variety of reasons. However, I do not buy all the hype and "statistics" regarding the evils of smoking. In my own case I was more healthy and felt better while I was smoking. After quitting I gained weight, developed high cholesterol and blood pressure. In this country too many of us are too ready to force our beliefs, values, and practices on others. It seems that the anti-smoking frenzy is much more of a moral issue than a health issue. Non-smokers and especially former smokers are such self-righteous folks.

Sorry to disappoint you, but smoking IS unhealthy. It's a well proven fact that smoking increases your risk for many many many health problems. It's not about beliefs or values, but rather scientific evidence.

Congratulations on quitting... it's VERY difficult.

I don't care if you smoke or not, it's your life. But know the facts. Just like other health issues like barebacking. It's your choice.
