OK.. so it's totally odd when halfway though the movie they suddenly start to sing the dialogue. It's also kinda odd to see about 4 types of movie being made at once.

but it's good.. I like it a lot more than I thought I'd like it.

And how the fuck did that chick get voted off American Idol when Bo Bice and the girl who's name nobody remembers came in first and second? It just proves that American Idol isn't about finding someone who can sing, it's about finding dull singers that dull people can tollerate.

I had the same thoughts. I grew up listening to a lot of the Motown music, I enjoyed the film.

I'm not normally into musicals, but this one was an exception.

The best thing thats happened to me all year, was when I went to Best Buy to buy Dreamgirls on DVD.
The girl working the register starts talking to me about the movie and says, and I quote....

"This was a good movie, but they was singin too much. It was more like a musical or something."

It took everything in my power to not laugh. lol.

That is hilarious:rotflmao:. I wasn't feeling as much as I thought I would and I am the type that likes musicals. Loved Moulin Rouge and Chicago and I even liked RENT. So I was surprised when I only thought it was OK.

OK, I never saw chicago... I think Moulin Rouge was so horrible I wanted to punch Nicole Kidman in the face until she passed out and Rent is the worst movie I've ever seen (and I'm including Ishtar, body of evidence and Manequin Too in that). I didn't know they could make movies THAT bad.

but I liked Dreamgirls. Go figure.

I think these two sentences are basically saying the same thing--and I think it is completely accurate.

I loved the movie when I first saw it, but the more I think about it, I realize it could have been sooo much better.

For the record: I really liked Moulin Rouge, but Nicole Kidman just can't sing. Loved Chicago, really liked Rent, but again..could have been sooo much better. I actually really liked (but didn't love) the Phantom of the Opera movie as well.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Dreamgirls was not only a good musical but it really captured the essence of that time period. Jennifer Hudson deserved all of her awards.

What I mean about 4 types of movie being made is that at one point it's a pseduo-musical... like Saturday Night Fever, Flash Dance or What's Love got to do with it?
...realist films where there's a backdrop of singing and dancing.

At another it's a boner-fied movie musical where they sing the dialogue and singers perform soliloquies in song.. singing to themselves... production numbers.

At another it seems to be almost a historical movie about the late 60s and early 70s and how political unrest and race relations gave way to the 70s where black artists were finally accepted by white audiences.

It seems to flash back and forth between a very realist editing style to a very choppy Eisenstein-like juxtaposition edit style (yes... I DID actually study film in college) and it seems to bounce back and forth from one mastering technique to another.. the scenes with Jennifer Hudson in the second and third act have different everything... (depth of focus, film stock, colour depth and even sound mastering) than the stuff with Beyonce.

There's a lot of stories going on.. family struggles... Beyonce's charcter's career path, Jennifer Hudson's character's career path.. for a while it's like switching channels from one movie to another.

But the end result is something that works.

And yes... I take back all I said about Jennifer Hudson. She'll be the only real star to emerge from American Idol.

Ironic isn't it. Wow about your last post, you really know your filmmaking techniques. IS their anything you can't do?

But I LIKED Moulin Rouge. :(

Especially the part where Ewan McGregor suddenly started singing Elton John's Your Song. I would've married him right then and there. :luv:

Oh god, me too! His singing really surprised and impressed me!

Just for the record, Jennifer Hudson was not on the same season of American Idol that Bo Bice was on. (And as an aside, I think Bo Bice should have won instead of that boring fembot Carrie Underwood).

whatever... point is that she's obviosuly a real star.. the rest are just lounge singers.

As a side note, I was driving out to Palm Springs a few hours ago (I'm out here shooting four new Fratmen movies this weekend) and Clay Aiken is playing the Casino on the Indian Reserve just west of here.

Instant Lounge Lizard.

I laughed so hard when I read Manequin Too that I had actual tears streaming down my face. lol. I had tried to forget all about that movie. I swear to god you're my favorite poster on JUB. lol.

I saw that in the freaking THEATER.

Man, it was like they had a meeting and said "Let's take the best stupid movie ever and make in into the worst stupid movie ever."
