  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

So I'm thinking about retiring....

Travel! Find an animal hotel or a house sitter or whatever for the cats and travel, not just once, but many times to many places. (The cats will be be there when you return, and soon enough forget that you were ever gone.) You're interested in the classical world? What could be more important than visiting Greece, Sicily and Italy, particularly if you haven't visited them in a while, or ever? Throw in Copenhagen, Munich, Berlin, Paris and London for the Greek and Roman antiquities you'll find in those cities and you need multiple trips. You know, of course, that visiting the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples and seeing the finds from Herculaneum and Pompeii and the Farnese collection will bring you more deeply felt pleasure and satisfaction than staying home and feeding the cats.

You should travel if you can afford it. I always put off my dream vacations and now I'll never get to do them. Enjoy yourselves and find someone trusted to take care of your cats and home.

Follow your passion...whatever that may be..at any age....

^this

I'm in Thynight's boat, tho fuck only knows who's rowing it.

^fucking hilarious

RB,

Have you considered doing charity work?

I come from a very poor family and atm I am as poor as fuck, however, one of my greatest joys is volunteer work.
In the past it was primarily helping troubled youth and cooking for the homeless in my city back when I lived in Cali.

Even now, my mom and I are planning on cooking Thanksgiving dinner for a local homeless shelter here in town as we usually do every year.

I would do the writing part, maybe start a travel blog, make youtube videos, involve your cats both in the blog/vlog and videos, monetize the blog and the vids and donate the money to a charity or some organization who needs it.

The greatest thing older folk can do is to be a teacher and an influence to the next generations. Why not give something back and enrich your retirement years with the blessings you have been afforded?

just a thought.

^ I actually have been spending about 50% of my time already working for non-profit causes over the last 5 years. It has been a bit of a semi-retirement so that I could put some of my energy into a couple of causes while I still had it.

But maybe part of the burn-out there is that it has always been at the organizational level and not much hands-on. My sister starting working at the food centre to prepare and serve meals to the homeless. We don't have a lot of call for many services like this out in the country where we live but there are probably some organizations that could use more help in the urban centres nearby who wouldn't have to depend on us in bad driving weather.

I have thought about offering to tutor kids in the area in literacy but there seems to be a general apathy about this....I will give this more thought as well, though.

My advice would be to follow your heart and try to slow down the tempo to preserve your health. (*8*)
Travelling would be a good option to kickstart your retirement period because it would keep you busy both physically and mentally (unless you prefer just being lazy at the beach) for some time and getting to know new places and cultures may inspire you a lot. While leaving your cats may seem to be a problem, you could always ask some relative or a good friend to come and visit them every now and then. They need food, care and attention, but usually accept a carying person.
After you come back from a trip, it may seem easier for you to decide what are the things you would like to do in the nearest future. No matter what option (-s) you prefer, just try to have as much positive variety in life as possible.

The one trip that we need to take....and it would mean finding someone to live in our house for at least a month...is into the Tibetan plateau to visit friends. It takes almost a week to get there and of course, a week to get back so we would need to spend at least two or more weeks there.

While we are there, we actually would likely be welcomed as guest teachers...as long as the Tibetan-Chinese authorities approved.
I have no real Tibetan, so perhaps we would be able to be taught Tibetan while we are there.

I am starting to look at this trip more seriously and will be discussing it with our friends over the next few months.

It would be a good start.

^ We'll keep you posted.

You must love 4 cats.

Including the one that wakes you up at 4:30 am EVERY morning.

Have you ever thought of opening a little B&B at your farm?

I understand those things practically run themselves. And with charming customers to boot! It would be invigorating and not just glamorous.

I'm thinking about adjusting my lifestyle so that it is a possibility in the future. I'm self-employed, so I don't have a pension. I don't know if I will ever fully retire, but I have already cut back on business stuff as things change. I would like to simplify my life. Leave near a market and the gym, preferably be able to walk and bike there to get more steps in.

Well this is scary.

Since the thread was started, I still think about retiring...but I have more work on the go than ever.

And some projects that will take me through the next few years.

I would also add that because of COVID years...and then the war in Ukraine, our inclination to travel anywhere we can't drive in a day or at most 2 has decreased in a major way.

I have become my Dad, content to stay at home with the garden and the cats.

Except for a long weekend in Vermont each year but one, we haven't gone anywhere else since 2019.

The war is a terrible thing but there are plenty of places you can still visit that are nowhere near that part of the world. Our holiday of a lifetime dream trip to Belarus is sadly still on hold but we still get out to Hexham and Whitley Bay.

Well, Philadelphia is about an eight-hour drive away. I'll meet you there!

(I'd say take the train, but that's quite a bit longer.)

I'm also self employed now. Just turned 40. I had a career going before so I had a retirement plan and everything. Cashed all of those things out and sold everything to start my real estate business. So, when I retire I will not have any of those. In other words, I will have to start saving up for retirement.

I gotta admit that retirement sounds scary to me. There is something about it that has always scared me deep down. To me, it means one is at a point where one is waiting to die.

Good that you bought the real estate. There were periods when I should have invested more in it, but I have always hated debt. And getting more of it meant more risk to me at times when I saw neighbors with much higher incomes than me losing their homes. I also have a friend that inherited several properties and has rentals and always is short of money. But I think he just makes a lot of bad decisions. So I never took the steps necessary to get more other than the home I live in. And now I'm thinking that I really don't want to take on more, and real estate has already gone up so much. I really can't believe what people are paying for rent in my area. My mortgage payment is less than a small studio apartment. I saw someone this week advertising renting a bedroom in a house for $1,400.

I remember one of the weird things is that after posting this, a number of projects got a 'Go'.

And over the last few years, I have commented on a couple of occasions that now, the clients just come to me because of referral or past work. No proposals. No bullshit. And I am finally getting paid a per diem that reflects experience and expertise.

But I am thinking about my partner. Who works with me every day. And is 7 years older.

We can't keep doing this. I now suggest more days that he doesn't need to be in the office except for a few hours in the afternoon, if at all.

I now only work until 3:30 in the office and then come home where I will do a bit more work but start to decompress and play with the cats or garden or drink a nice white or red before an early dinner.
