I am kind of a luddite when it comes to computer tech, but legitimately wonder how a sockpuppet - a user with an other pixieish account - is outed.

If the sockpuppet uses the same computer I can see it. But if one uses a friend's computer it would seem undetectable.

How would you find the sockpuppet?

Sockpuppet bait.

It's a 'homespun' recipe that would lose its potency if I were to post its ingredients.

Direct and lead them in conversations. They'll eventually slip up and give themselves away with their typing/spelling habits, or what one person knows and the other shouldn't.

The topic of sockpuppets should provide some very interesting discussions here since we have had more than a few of them. Some have used sockpuppets for the amusement of others, think:Marvtha, while others have used sockpuppets to deceive or take advantage of others. Still others have been accused of being sockpuppets without any proof. Now, instead of accusing someone of being a sockpuppet, they are called trolls.

To answer the question, I have no idea how you would uncover such a person. Palbert, would you give us more info or context about this question?

Sixthson, I have no particular circumstance or individual in mind.

The question was prompted by a colloquy held in another HT thread.

Also, in my mere 2 years on the board I have seen allusions to how they are caught out or how the MODS trace them. I was just curious about insight into the processes.

MODS (presumably) have access to all the IP addresses that come into JUB. IP addresses basically being the locations of the PC's being used, and with what screen names. Multiple Screen names being used on one IP address is very suspect, in most cases. While it could be two boyfriends living together, or roommates, for the most part it should equal one name per one IP address. I access JUB from 2-3 different PC's at home, and 1 at work. My screen name should be connected to 3-4 separate IP addresses in their records that can be traced back to me. Think of them as mini versions of the NSA.

That's generally true, yes - as you say, for the most part. Though - and I'm not saying people should be surfing JUB at work, though some here say they have the freedom/flexibility to do so; especially if they are the boss. ;) - it can be different in a corporate environment where hundreds (even thousands) of computers, no matter where internal to the organization, are putting out the same identical IP address (or IP range, like a block of 20 addresses) to the outside world because that's the hardware firewall or corporate web proxy's IP. Web cafes or libraries, too, I suppose, depending on how the connections are configured. Also, if someone really wanted to go to the effort to impersonate a supporter or a back-and-forth conversation on JUB, I'm sure they'd just use a Proxy service or other anonymizer.

I didn't hear the "sockpuppet" terminology but we've all seem conversations where it's just two people at all hours of the night (and day!) back-and-forth in a thread that would not only be better suited for PM but looks suspiciously like someone interacting with themselves, lol. (Although I suppose, philosophically, it could be asked that if you can't interact with yourself, with whom can you in this world? ;) )

It would be bizarre if only one person with several names interact with one self. Has that happened before ?

Yeah, that's what I meant in the context of the way I opened my paragraph, yes. I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek, and who knows how often it realistically happens, but I've seen examples on JUB where everyone swears it's the same guy day-and-night trading exchanges with his own self (under two different nicknames). Who knows! :)

Knowing how, you can easily change your IP address to whatever you want it to be. I choose Chicago to catch the American Netflix. But I live a little north of Toronto.
