I work with special ed kids at a group home and a school (same campus) and I have been doing so for about five years now. I must say that I love what I do and I love these kids. Tonight was my last night with my favorite 12 year old little girl. She is being sent to program in Florida, and I have been crushed knowing that I will loose her. Over the past few years working with her she has become someone very special to me. She is very neurologically impaired and has alot of brain damage, and I loved her at first sight. She is one of the funniest kids I have ever met. EVER! This being her last weekend I took her out to dinner and to Toys R Us to spoil her. So tonight I spent the night giving her extra attention. As my shift was getting closer to being over I was getting sad because I was forced to realize that I would never see her again. So as I was on my way out I was trying hard to not cry (I dont cry that easily) so I told her I loved her and she said "I love you too". I couldnt fight the tears and started to loose it because no one says things to me like that. I felt her words resonate inside me like sound in a churchbell. I was so touched because that was the sweetest most simplest thing ever. So needless to say the ride home was rather wet, and writing this now I am getting a little teary. With that said I just wanted to share that with you all. So yeah...I am not good with this mushy stuff so I will leave it at that.

"Don't be sad its over, be happy it happened."

That is a very nice story my friend. Sometimes those little kids can touch you in ways you would never expect. I'm sure you friend will do just fine, after all she has had you as a mentor.
You do fine work with these kids man. Good for you. Not everyone has the ablitity to work with kids like this and although you say you don't come to tears easily, I find that a bit hard to believe. After all, a guy like you that has spent so much time doing what you do must have a very soft heart. And this world is a much better place because of people like you friend.
God Bless you buddy.

That's sweet, Ryze. You're a good man and she's a good kid. Maybe you can keep in contact with her somehow? Did you talk to her parents? Maybe you can send her letters.

What a lovely story and what a sweet guy you must be. Thank you for sharing. (*8*)

I think your siggie says it all. Be happy in that you made a difference in a young person's life. You made another human beings life more livable and happier. If there were more people like you this earth wouldn't be such a bad place. I know your not looking for thanks or a pat on the back but man you deserve one. God bless you buddy....

What you have done for this lovely young lady C., she will never forget. How magical you must have made her days.

Special Education children/students can bring so much joy into people's lives and people are just not aware of that.

Yes their parents go through some very strenuous times, but i think if you chatted with most of them, you would see the pride they have in their children.

If you really want a teaching experience with Special Education Students, work in a class that has both aphasia and mildly autistic children present (elementary school.)

I promise you the most wonderful experience of a life time. And if you are fortunate enough, to be able to "break through" the autism, you cannot possible imagine what is hidden behind there. Take my word for it. Hi Andre.

Too bad that in your profession, you have to NOT take things too personal or get caught up in emotions with your patients....

This little girl represents ALL that you see and fortuanately, she is being sent to where someone will love and understand her so that she is NOT mis-treated while getting love and understanding....

I don't think you came out on the bad end of the stick though, for she told you the 3 words that you wanted to hear........"I Love You"!

Remember, you've done your job when these kids can allow their love to come out, in spite of all their problems...

Sweet story, sweet little girl and sweet man!(*8*) (*8*)

Well, it made me teary just reading it! Thanks for sharing.

Whatever else happens...it sounds like you had a positive influence on her life...and she had a positive influence on yours.

That's all good...|

We can always learn from others - and the situations in which life places us. We can learn from people who are older, younger, richer, poorer, more intelligent or more innocent.

It sounds like you learnt something about yourself from her - treasure that.:D

It's always nice to have such a special bond. I take my hat off to you for being able to care for people with disabiity. Its often a difficult and challenging task that can be thankless.

These moments are what propel my friends to continue when feeling frustrated.

What a sweet post. Congrats to you on doing such a wonderful job with this kid. You must be very special.

Working with people with special needs can be amazing. We don't always see or realize the impact we have on their lives. It is great when we do. You now know you were special to this girl. I was also lucky enough to have one of my residents point that out; they told me they had missed me upon my return from a vacation.. It floored me because on a typical day she sees about 30 staff, yet she realized when I returned that she had not seen me in a week. It times like those that make me remember why I am in this field.

You are a special person.I hope some other lucky child will touch your heart as much as she does
