I've always wanted to go to Southern Decadence in New Orleans. It's the big gay gathering over Labor Day weekend.

This year I'm going.

I planned f-a-r in advance; booked an Airbnb cottage and transportation.

And, lo and behold: a monkeypox threat.

I'm still going. I know some outdoor concerts have been cancelled. But I trust there will still be fun events.

Old folks like me have some protection, since we got a smallpox vaccination long ago.

I'll let you know what happens.

Enjoy your trip. I've not heard of Southern Decadence before and will be interested to hear how you get on.

I'm envious - New Orleans is my favorite city but I won't live there because of the weather - I have been many times....

does the school vax of smallpox still count? I had that - and I got a "monkeypox" vax 2 days ago - still going for a booster in a few weeks...

I don't think Monkeypox is transmitted in any airborne manner, so not sure why outdoor concerts are cancelled for that, unless they are so packed that rubbing shoulders is a given.

Glad you are finally getting to go. It's too hot to appeal to me, but the food must be out of this world. Cajun is my favorite over any other when it is done well.

You be careful in the heat down there. It's stifling with that high humidity. Take lots of pictures for us homebodies.

I'm flying South this morning. I'm spending a couple days in Biloxi before hitting the Big Easy.

French & Cajun are my 2 favorites - so it's a win/win for me in Norleans - the food is fantastic - I highly recommend a french restaurant in the garden district called Le Petite Grocer - it was an old grocery store - suberb!

I've never made it to Southern Decadence but have a number of friends that have. I had thought of going this year or next but kind of watch the hurricane forecasts. Two years straight it was evacuated because it looked like it would be hit by a hurricane and then Covid visited. Monkeypox doesn't worry me because I had the shot for Smallpox and have also gotten two vax shots for monkeypox. The biggest problem with the concerts is that they are sweaty, slithering, steamy body massages along with an occasional boy getting bent over or on their knees.

Earlier this year, since I serve on a task force that tried to correct the disaster of Covid response by the past administration, we watched as monkeypox appeared. Some colleagues began noting it must be a "big city" issue since that is where all the hot spots seemed to appear. I actually nearly laughed because if you looked two weeks earlier in all of those locations there was a large, gay event. Pride seemed to be a good indicator of the next hot spot.

I'm in New Orleans!

Bars in the French Quarter were somewhat busy; a little farther away, they weren't. The buzz is that hotels are charging premium prices, but aren't necessarily full. Harrahs IS full Sunday, but Saturday is available for $705 per room. That's the highest price until New Years, which is $862.

I googled Southern Decedence. I didnt know if they have public ex like they do at Folsom Fair. They do. Go away Monkeypox!!!!

Decedence would be people dying, so monkey pox would be appropriate on the spectrum.

Just sayin' . . .

^Monkeypox is rarely fatal.

^^No public nudity...but awfully close.

^^^I'm staying not far from Dooky Chase's, passed it...why not?

Today was a good day, with a little disappointment.

I took a walking tour of the Garden District in the morning. What amazing houses. I saw where Anne Rice lived, and where Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) lived...and celebrities own some of the houses although their privacy has been kept secret from me.

I then enjoyed a late breakfast at the Camellia Grill, and then to Harrah's Casino. I did quite well, and hit a jackpot over $1,200.

I returned to my cottage for a rest. I love this little place, just off Esplanade Ave. near Broad. The street in front is under construction and it's a mess. But I'm glad I'm not staying in the French Quarter or I'd be even more of a drunken mess than I possibly am.

I then went to the block party at the Phoenix bar in the Marigny, just outside the French Quarter. There's the disappointment. The party started at 9:00. The two opening acts performed; Dog Weekend (who is Trent Rush) was good and took off his clothes for his closing number. Hey, it was hot. I did say hello afterward. Sora, who seemed non-binary and had great energy, performed next. Dog Park Dissidents were scheduled for 10:00, and Pansy Division at 11:00...but the police shut down the stage at 10. People were still there. Just no more entertainment. I'm not sure why.

So it's fairly early to bed for me tonight. There's supposed to be festival-like happenings tomorrow.

Don't pass it, man. Stop and eat.

That Edgar Chase IV who is Leah Chase's grandson is one handsome chef, but more importantly, he is personable and has a generous spirit. He's also on several charity boards about New Orleans, so a good citizen.

If I ever go back to New Orleans, I'm definitely going there.

I think that is good. If they're closed for the holiday, it sounds like he might be in town and there, which would be a treat. I know with chefs like Lidia Bastianich, she has a few restaurants, so the chances of catching her in one of them would be very low.

From what I see, Mr. Chase is about to be a rising star in his own right, and will become much more of a name when this new TV series takes off.

New Orleans is a gem of a town. Hoping to be there for next year's Southern Decadence.

I had a wonderful lunch at Dooky Chase's yesterday. The food was delicious, and the ambiance even better. It's a fine dining restaurant with colorful New Orleans artworks.

I did go to the Southern Decadence parade Sunday. It was fun and festive.

I also saw Amber Martin perform a Bette Midler tribute cabaret, danced at Oz, and did naked karaoke at All Ways Lounge.

I don't know if I'm going back for Decadence. I liked New Orleans a lot and definitely want to return. But I do better without crowds: didn't really make friends. My personality goes from outgoing to standoffish, so I'll take the blame. But I had more fun at Northalstead Market Days in Chicago in August...that's definitely on my return list. Maybe New Orleans again some less busy week!

Did you get to meet any of the Chase family? I know several work there at least some.
