That's a fair amount of power. Studio XPS is the new platform.

Devil's advocate questions - just to make sure you have all the accessories you'll need/want.

No Bluetooth? $40 for the capability - you might regret later. Wireless keyboard, peripherals? Can add using a USB plug-in, if you need it later, I guess.

Also, just the base 256 Graphics, instead of $100 for the 512? This might be a big one for a gamer.

Blu-Ray compatibility so you can watch blu-ray pix on your eventual nice, crisp, monitor? Won't have to buy a blu-ray player independently down the road if it's in your PC.

Networking?

These can add some serious bucks to your system.

I'm just asking -- you're the one who plays games, and it's your money.

If it's inside your budget, I'd consider the Blu-tooth and 512 graphics for the long haul.

If you are looking at a large monitor or 1080p lcd TV cum monitor instead, the blu-ray player or player/recorder options might also wind up being less than standalone units down the road, and give you access to them now.

Again, the base system is pretty decent - will certainly blow my laptops away.
I am only asking the questions you ask yourself - one last time, so you don't regret later..

Just make sure all is the same. We have Citi Education rewards. When I've linked to Dell thru there, the pricing isn't the same.

They upcharge/reconfig so you're paying for the extra discount. When is a deal, NOT?!

I may be wrong, but it felt that way everytime I checked - I'm on Dell.com almost every day playing, since I get their e-mails every day.

I just tried this coupon on a monitor at Dell Small Business and it seems to be working.

That hasn't been the case when I've linked through fatwallet to buy from Dell or any other vendor.

Purina,
You've thrown a new monkey wrench into the mix -- Dell Small Business -- they probably don't offer PabloZed's dream machine Studio XPS with the coupon because it's on the Home Office side of the business, not the Small Business side.

I hope I'm wrong. I just know the Small Business Laptops I've looked at (my wife has a Dell Latitude from her work) are Expensive - probably built tough, but very under powered as compared to what I see in the current to current offerings.

Try getting the Studio XPS up in the area you're posting the coupon against, and see what happends.

I suspect Michael Dell reads/has people read MacWorld.

This would explain why I got my first ever post-purchase follow up call from Dell about a month after I bought my two Studio 15's from the Dell Store.

And why their support was SO Much Humbler and Harder working to ensure customer satisfaction -- after I called post downloading IE8 and not realizing it was a possible reason for my ATI drivers to act up. We got past my resistance to New Delhi service, I didn't think we were going to be able to resolve remotely since laptop had died. But, it powered up, he got remote session going, worked thru the ATI driver issues and got if fixed.

At the same time, my daughter was having non-recoverable issues with my year plus old Inspiron 1520.

So, I paid for Dell support extension to have them work with me on Inspiron, too. This was trickier - we hadn't backed up files, I couldn't find my install disks. So, he sent our new disks, then we tried but weren't successful getting a safe mode boot. We would up using my Studio 15 to burn a CD of Linux recovery CD, which we used to search and fix the affected files -- due to IE8 download. He saved all of my files, got system up and running, called a few days later to make sure all was still well, AND let me know about some specials on cameras, printers, etc.

They are making definite attempts to improve their customer service image. And they are being successful.
I have to give the devil their due.

I didn't mean to suggest he should purchase the Studio XPS through Dell Small Business site. He can place a separate order there for a monitor and other accessories, which is all that the coupon I posted is good for.

But yes, depending on which he wants, the monitor may be a lower price on the Home site despite the SB coupon.

BTW the same configuration of Studio XPS at SB is $1,056.

Thanks guys. I guess I need to purchase by 4/23. Don Q., I plan to upgrade as you suggest for the blueray and graphics.

As far as the coupons, I was hoping just to use whatever I find at the same time I make the whole purchase (instead of buying piecemeal). If need be, I'll call and haggle over the phone.

Any further comments suggestions appreciated.

Ok, as I reconfigured it the pc came out to over $,1600 and I got cold feet. So I found this:

Dell Studio Slim Quad Core Desktop w/ 24" LCD Monitor & Blu-Ray Player

Dell S2409W 24" LCD; Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz; 2GB RAM; 500GB HDD; Blu-Ray player & DVD burner; gigabit ethernet; Vista Home Premium; ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB; 1yr warranty

$1169.00 - 25% off Code: 52KZSVRL0DVBMT = $876.75 Free Shipping

Sounds like a deal. I am just read to get off the potty so I need someone to give me the ok.

I am an iMac fan, but I play games and watch porn (yes, a perverted geek who also loves sci-fi). My bf actually gives me porn because otherwise I would be humping his leg so, for my bf's sake, I must be able to watch all those formats that iMac's can't play.

I have also just gotten off the phone with Dell. I got the pc as originally configured with the upgrades Don suggested (blu-ray, 512 card) as well as a scanner/printer for $1,300. As much as it pained me to spend that much in this economy, I ran out of excuses.

PabloZed,
Congratulations. You got off the dime (and/or pot as you said). You've got a lot of power in your new PC, and I think it will last you a long time. The bluray plus a cable means you can plug it into a large format 1080p (or 720p) TV if/when you get one and enjoy videos - and/or those games you love -- my son really liked playing Warcraft on our 42" Sony Bravia as a "monitor".

Our Dimension 8200 and 8250 desktops are still going strong after 6-8 years - yes, we've had to scrub once or twice when we weren't as diligent about scanning as we should be - was before PC Doctor was installed -- nice thing about that is it's good for up to 3 licenses, so you can put on multiple machines, legally.

You are at the leading edge of the curve, now, will be able to ride that thru a few years till you're "middle of the road(but still with the extra bells others don't have) to back side where it's not as glamorous, but still a very serviceable workhorse for you.

There's nothing wrong with your choice. Relax and enjoy it - when it gets there.

It's only money! Remember, I spent jsut over $2K on 2 laptops a couple of months ago -- and about what you just spent a year ago on the Inspiron laptop w/ blueray read/write. But, I also have a 7th grader and a junior at home, in addition to me wanting access to a pc when I want access -- instead of "homework" (yeah, right - IMing friends, too!) trumping me playing with you guys.

I hope you'll be very happy after all the second, third, FORTY-THIRD guessing of yourself!

Thanks. I always go through a number of steps before I make a large purchase. Before I bought my house I had everyone I knew take a look. Finally, I brought my mother by and when I told her the price she actually rolled her eyes and said, "all this fuss over that? Your problem is you want everything for free." Mom knows me best.

Yes, its only money and it was money someone else earned. I was just the beneficiary. And I managed not to spend the whole 2k.

Pablo,
I wasn't making light of the amount you spent. I know it was a lot of money, and it's good that you recognize and appreciate your good fortune that someone was willing to give you that much money to invest in a new system.

I was just trying to reassure you that you did well. Yes, you spent over $1000, but you got a lot for your money, and it should be around to service you for a long time.

Enjoy it.
