After some advice gents! Spyware was managed to download itself on my system 2 days ago - as soon as I noticed something wrong firewalls and cookies were increased to max whilst I tried to sort it out. I've read through some of your recommendations and have done numerous scans using:

Norton
SuperAdBlocker
Spyware Nuker
Windows Defender
AVG Anti-Spyware

The latter two were on the recommendation of a local computer shop. Whilst between them - not all of them I hasten to mention - namely Norton - I have managed to quarantine and shred a few trojan files identified however, in my system toolbar - XP by the clock - there's a shield which alternates between an X and a ? stating that system has idenfied numerous spyware applications and I should install a software package to combat it - a bit dubious me thinks - especially when for some strange reason my security centre in Windows is stating that it has never been started.

Also, sorry for the length guys - when i'm online I get notifications from Norton stating that a UDP Inbound is trying to access my computer - can anyone shed any light on what on earth a UDP is as I ain't got a clue and it's flagged as a medium risk on Norton?

Sorry for the length but my technical ins and outs knowledge is zip!!!!

Thanks!

Crisis averted!!!!!!!! Windows Defender has located a trojan downloader and has now sent it into the depths of hell! Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All you need is your antivirus software and Spybot Search and Destroy (www.safer-networking.org). DL Spybot, update it, use the immunize feature, and do a scan. It will catch anything still on your computer, and the immunize feature will prevent you from getting more (unless you go hunting for spyware).

I swear by Windows Defender. Since I installed it, I never have a problem with spyware or malware. Gave up on Norton a long time ago.

I got hit by one recently that screwed up Windows Defender, shut off Spybot from updating, danced around AVG, and befuddled Norton.

I tried running one, then another, then another, but even when I was offline items kept popping up again after they'd been deleted. The only thing I managed to do was wipe out a few thousand cookies -- Norton killed a horde, AVG slew armies, Spybot wiped out a legion, and Defender got a few companies.

I finally got an item called "SUPERantispyware", which in safe mode took care of the core of the problem; then I could update the others, and they finished off the details.

BTW: the invader turned off Task Manager and some other items, and wouldn't let me report program errors.

note: doing ANYTHING with IE while this was on my system only made it worse; by the time I beat it, there were a dozen trojans/worms/whatever crawling about.

guess: the only things I'd been doing on line that I normally don't was browsing porn... one site opened IE, and the next thing I knew, something was eating 99% of my system resources

Oh my gosh for the last 3 days i had the nastiest virus. Its called Antivirgear. What a bastard, it slowed down my system and kept popping up windows. It was a real pain in the butt.

Sometimes when you have a problem you think you are the only one but your not LOL. I did a quick search and found that numerous other people have had to deal with this trojan.

However it wasnt until just now that i tried a 14 th recommendation found on a forum and it worked.

I was happy, because, 3 days of frustration. I tell you i will never visit another adult site.

I had to disable IE because of some spyware that I had. I only use Firefox, Mozilla, and in rare cases Opera. I don't miss IE very much, although it seemed to be better at playing background music for some websites. I can live without that.
