Well guys, I have finally decided to do it. There is no time like the present and I am starting a new diet and exercise plan. I have come to realize that I need to get back into shape. So, I am thinking a low calorie diet (around 1800 calories to start) and lots of walking. Because, as we all know, it is hard to remain devoted to a diet and exercise plan, I would welcome all the support my fellow Jubbers are willing to provide! Thanks!

It sounds good, but try to be realistic. Can you honestly stay at 1800 calories a day? I would try eating more healthier, wholesome foods and focus less on calories. Also, walking alone probably won't help you that much. It will definitely take longer to see results. Throw in some weight training to help your muscles grow so they can help take off pounds too. If what you want to do works, that's cool too. I don't know how you eat on a daily basis, but I just don't see why you would want to deprive yourself when you don't have to.

Unless you're going to do a supervised plan like Weight Watchers, it's hard to get into physical shape on a low calorie diet. Getting below 2000 kcals per day does begin to lower your energy level. You'd be better off doing a portion control diet with more calories and working out intensely.

You'll also find that it's easier to stick to an exercise plan if you incorporate it with some behavior modification. Instead of taking the elevator, use the stairs. Instead of getting in your car for a short trip, walk. Instead of texting your friends, go for a walk, bike ride or jog together. When your favorite show is on, watch it at the gym while you're on the treadmill- it makes the time go much faster. Get one of those step counters- it makes you conscious of how much you're walking and can help encourage you to take advantage of free time to take a walk.

Ideally, diet and exercise shouldn't be misery. Exercise should make you feel better. And as you increase your activity level, your metabolic level should increase and shouldn't have to focus as much on dieting.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to adjust to focus more on healthy portion control and add some fun exercise (tennis, lifting, etc.) to the mix. I can even go run at the park with my hyper dog! Starting a new program like this is a bit overwhelming, but it will be worth it in the long run!

I started WW about a month ago and have lost about 8lbs official pounds. I didn't count the first week or two because I was getting use to the program so I was on guard and drop about 7lbs out the gate then reality hit, lol. So it's true, at least in my case, you average about 1 to 2lbs a week and I don't exercise. I also noticed my clothes fit differently so even though the lbs may not go down, you body changes. I got 2 more months before my trial period is over but I may stay with it since its not too depriving and the snacks are good. I only can eat the Chicken Fettucin and occasionally the Swedish Meatballs, the rest.. GAG. I have a scale I bought for 2 bucks at a thrift store years ago that I finally use and it comes in handy trying to figure out the ounces of food you eat. All this for someone who doesnt cook (my stove hasn't been on in over a year) but there are small home cooking places here. I just buy my food and weigh the meat, etc.

A diet based on weight and calorie is not the best thing.

A calorie is not a calorie, you would better change "what" and "how" you eat instead of "how many calories". The pure calorie intake is a misleading instrument because your body processes different food in different ways. There is a bif difference in eating 500 calories of beef and 500 calories of bread. And there is a huge impact when you add sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Weight is also a misleading measurement. Muscle weights more than fat, and fat is more valuable to your body than muscle. If you have sugar in your daily food, your body will reduce muscle before it even thinks about touching the fat.

I don´t want to write a whole book here, so if you wan´t to know more about the whole sugar and calorie stuff, listen to this good man here

For your diet I would recommend the following experiment: Don´t eat sugar or food made of fluor for 30 days. Eat as much meat and fish and vegetables as you want, as fresh as possible. The first days will be hard, but see how you feel after these 30 days.

For your working out: Walking will not help that much, your legs are very very good developed muscles. Try swimming instead, it´s a full body work without stressing your joints. And it´s a very good exercise for both endurance and power.

Paleo or primal diet is the best because it is the diet our genes are designed to eat.

Ditch all processed food from your diet, don't eat anything that your great-grand mother wouldn't recognize as food.

Don't eat any sugar, wheat and other grains, soy and other legume, industrial vegitable oil.

Eat real food
