“I have always said that if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know,” Mr. Jobs said in a letter released by the company. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

One Sunday morning in 2008, Vic Gundotra, a senior executive at Google, received a message from Steve Jobs, asking him to call him at home immediately. ''So, Vic'', said Jobs, ''we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I've already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow.''
What was this critical problem, so important that it was disrupting the weekend of two of the most important men in Silicon Valley? ''I've been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone'', said Jobs, ''and I'm not happy with the icon. The second 'O' in Google doesn't have the right yellow gradient. It's just wrong and I'm going to have Greg fix it. Is that OK with you?''
It is this attention to detail, this fanatical preoccupation with aesthetics, that turned the head of Apple into the world's first auteur chief executive, the creative titan behind the coolest, most lucrative and most desirable devices on Earth.

i don't know what YOU read, but my post talked about the new apple politics - indirectly brought up by the poster above me , and still introduced by Steve Jobs. I did not talk about jobs himself nor his personal health.
Yet nobody mentions that Tim Cook, the new CEO is probably gay? Kind of surprising.
I laughed about that one, too. Also I was disappointed that Jobs hadn't already GOD as caller idI enjoyed this anecdote:
Nah .. first it's apple that we are talking aboutYet nobody mentions that Tim Cook, the new CEO is probably gay? Kind of surprising.
Not to be a hater, but I think a lot of the hoopla surrounding Jobs is too much. Jobs is the ultimate free-rider. He (smartly) lets some company bumble around with technology and he comes in a distant second (or third or fourth) with this "new" technology. He just puts his products in an excellent wrapper.
He's what you learn in marketing as a "second mover."
I'd also like to add that I do respect him and like Apple products. I was using Macs in Kindergarten. I was raised by Jobs in a way. But I noticed the media sings his praises way too much.
Android wouldn't exist were it not for iOS. Same for Windows Phone 7, and to a lesser extent, WebOS.
You frankly don't understand the arc of the technological age we're living in if you're relegating him, or Apple, to a 'free-rider'.
Actually, Android began in October, 2003 as a project to develop an OS for a smartphone. Google bought Android in 2005 as part of its attempt to bring a Google-branded smartphone to market.
The iPhone did not appear until June 2007. We don't know when iOS development began internally at Apple, as everything that happens inside Apple is top secret (Jobs is pathological about secrecy). However, it is clear that Android development had been under way for years before the world knew iOS existed.
Steve Jobs has said that iOS began as a tablet OS, not a smartphone OS. He has said that he stopped development on the iPad in order to get a smartphone out first. It is likely that Apple ported iOS to the smartphone platform and released the iPhone before the iPad in order to beat Android to market.
It is quite possible that the iPhone exists because of Android, not vice versa.
