Ok... i've pretty much come to terms with needing to reinstall windows. But I thought i'd check here just in case someone had an idea.

System specs:
Windows XP Pro SP2; and should be fully patched.
P4 2.7 ghz
2 gb ram
the rest, i don't think is relevant to this particular problem, i've not changed any of the hardware for at least 6 months.

Anyway...a week ago, after installing nothing new recently, about a minute after booting into windows nothing would open or start. after a few frustrating days i checked task manager and found that scvhost.exe after about a minute would suddenly increase to 99-100% CPU usage. this will last for about 10 minutes. after which time the system is fine. system restore no longer works at all, not in regular mode or in safe mode. it used to only work in safe mode but now i get "...application has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

at first i thought maybe it was some malware/spyware thing doing something. but i've ran spybot, ad-aware, and AVG scans of the computer and come up with nothing. i've shut off the cable modem thinking that if it was spyware doing something it was doing it out to the web and that maybe turning off the internet connection would stop it. but turning off the modem makes no difference.

I can end task on svchost and use the system again. But that causes various problem, such as my sound no longer working. trying to run msconfig doesn't work anymore either, nothing happens.

i've googled and seen somethings on this. But i don't have disk keeper, and i don't have any VM stuff. also automatic updates are set to notify me but not to automatically download/install.

i'm pretty sure i'll need to reinstall, but i thought i'd ask. ;)

ran into a similar problem with my laptop about a month ago. i did an exhaustive list of things to fix it, but i ended up formatting and reinstalling. not much stumps me, but what you're describing is exactly what happened to my laptop (after running for about 3 years on the same install). I couldn't find a solution other than to format, and the laptop needed it anyways. Sorry i'm not much help. Noelie?

/\ thanks proven. i'm not expecting someone know, since i've googled the hell out of this and am not sure what is going on. Anyway I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I've heard of this problem too, it came after opening an email attachment (The email wasn't a virus). The cause was an update for Windows. What they did to fix it was roll back the updates and then re-install them.

/\ mine is a corporate version. so no activation. i've not had it balk at me yet. i've reinstalled it...oh i don't know maybe 3-4 times.

i've just recalled that this could have happened 2-3 weeks ago (or 4 rather since it's now been over a week since i've been having the problem). Since i was using torrents to get knoppix 5.2 for almost 2 weeks, so that could have put me back in april when it started doing it... so i guess it could have been the last group of updates that came out. I hadn't shutdown until week before last and that was when it started.

damn it, if knoppix 5.2.1 would come out i think i'd just install that. i'm hoping it will have come along enough for me to decide to do that. i've been waiting since version 3.3 and with the last one version 5.1.1 i thought they were almost there. :gogirl:

by the way T, 5.2 started off in english, but then once i got it booted a lot of stuff was in german, enough so i couldn't use it. !oops! #-o

The problem is most likely with windows update. Go into the services and disable the "Automatic Updates". Just disabling through control panel isn't enough.

Restart the computer to see if the problem has been fixed.

Also make sure is that Windows is fully updated before trying this.

Apparently, you need to switch both Knoppix and KDE to English, separately.

For knoppix, at the boot screen prompt type "knoppix lang=us". {"=" is shift+0 in this case, as grub defaults to german keyboard settings.}

For KDE, go to Control Center > Country & Language (second down on the Regional & Accessibility icon that looks like flags) and select English.

See: http://pcburn.com/article.php?sid=2182

#-o doh. i didn't think of that! also i didn't read that whole article. But i did see it, just didn't see the part about toggling KDE to US support. i also just kept thinking, well SURELY 5.2.1 would be out soon, since the web site says it would likely be released in April.

{I should try to install Gnome in knoppix, one of these days. Then we could have Gnoppix!}

..| then you would love knoppix as much as I. :gogirl:

i still need to get Kbuntu going again and see if i can get those NTFS drives mounted. I keep putting it off. !oops!

Hullo Mr. Resident Time Lord,

I had the same thing happen to me. Disabling Windows Update didn't help, although it lengthened the time my laptop was up and running until svchost would hog the CPU and starve out all other processes rendering my laptop unusable.

These instructions fixed the problem:

http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=906329&SiteID=2

There are notes in that forum thread that "this discussion is closed because it doesn't belong here". Ignore that -- the instructions are still valid. Apparently what happened to me is a temp directory where Windows Update puts its files was corrupted. Perhaps you're also so lucky. :D

Whoops -- drat. Never mind. I just tried to go to my own link and it doesn't work anymore.

Try searching microsoft.com for svchost and "Windows update". Maybe you can find wherever they moved the thread to.

Viel Gluck!

Well it looks like it is the windows update thing. I've waited the ~10 for svchost to drop back to normal and it did. then i went MS's site to try and download the patches, but svchost goes back up to 100% and then i just sit here....waiting.

...still waiting.... so you're wondering how i typed this right? well if i have the application open prior to svchost going to 100% it continues to function. but god don't let me try to open/start something that wasn't already going.

I found that it wasn't WINDOWS UPDATE, but rather MICROSOFT update, whihc included checking and downloading updates for my Office 2003 PRO crapola... I went back to plain old windows update and don't have a problem any longer.

noelie et al, you see that msxsxml32.exe...that entry is in my start up multiple times i uncheck it and after the next reboot a new one is there and it's checked. i think perhaps that's my problem with the 100% CPU on scvhost. spybot says it's a virus, but i can't seem to get anything to detect it. what ya'll think?

Sorry gabriel1 I don't want to get into a competition with you but I said most of what's in that link in my first post. My name is noelie btw not 'he'.

What you said a few posts back was:

What that link says is:

Be so kind as to show me the similarities as I only see one line that's similar. If anything we've complemented each other not duplicated each other.

I agree, and that will teach me to post before the coffee kicks in.
