System specs for Vista

Simple question, I'm running windows 2000 at the moment, I just want to know how I can find my computer specs to see if I can run Vista. I dont think I can (old computer), but I cant find a shop that sells Windows xp without buying it online. And due to a complicated home situation (I'm moving not so complicated) I cant order online at the moment.

I also cant run the program that tells me if I can install vista because I need windows xp to run it! stupid thing!

I'm not tech smart, I would just would like an easy way to find my system specs. The only 2 I cant confirm are these.

• 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory

I cant put a tick next to them and wondered if you guys could help.

Honeslty, I would wait until the new Windows OS comes out in August. It is supposed to be better than Vista and require less system requirements.

In order to run Vista, you need at least 1g of memory and have a 32 bit processor.

But again, I would wait if you can. I am running Vista on my laptop and not all that impressed.

To be perfectly honest I just want windows XP but you cant buy that in shops anywhere, and due to moving its very impractical to buy it online.

Could you purchase it after moving? Ordering offline will take between 3-7 days shipping (newegg as an example), you could also have it shipped to a friends place, and it's defiantly cheaper buying online.

I agree with sixfeetu02453 with waiting for a the new OS from M$, Windows 7. It'll be less demanding on older systems. It will have the same requirements, but won't be as taxing like vista is.

What is also required besides what you stated is, 1gig of ram, Though I would recommend 2gigs. 40gig hard drive with at least 15gigs free for clean install. A DVD drive is a must. Those are the specs right off of Microsoft's website for anything other then Vista Home. Vista home requires 512mb of ram (still would recommend 2gigs), and a 20gig hard drive with 15gigs free.

To find out your specs... Google PCWizard 2008, you'll get CPUID as the first find and click on that. Near the top of the site you'll find a place to download. This program will tell you more then you need, but when it starts it'll give you some basics about your computer. You will want to look at the processor, physical memory (it'll be in mb, 1024mb = 1gig), Hard Disk, Rom Drive, and DirextX.

The reason I want it now is that my computer is due for a wipe and general tidy up which I normally do every so often, format the main drive and do a clean install of windows 2000 because it just gets buggy after so long.
Well everything needs at least windows xp or above now and it just made sense, also I wont be without the internet for 2 weeks so installing xp/vista and just sorting out files and crap was going to be my entertainment! But I can always wait I guess.

My desktop is due for the same thing. XD been over a year sense a clean install! Yeah, I noticed that most things need XP or above when I tried to install Adobe CS3 Master on a win2k computer. I've done the sorting out file entertainment too, when I didn't have internet for 2 months!

Well, if your computer was built after 2001-2 and has a P4, there is a good chance that vista will run, just don't expect it to run fast like win2k and you might need to do a memory upgrade.

Hmmm... Microsoft offers up a release date for a new and most wonderful operating system, and folks believe them. Interesting...

There are a lot of XP machines out there that are no longer being used. If only one had a barrowed XP cd and one of those unused keys. Hmmm.....

I stopped believing in wonderful new operating systems from Microsoft with the release of ME.
I was however, reasonably satisfied with a new machine I purchased in '05 with XP sp2. It was very reliable.

I now have a new 64 bit system with Vista sp1.
I am not overjoyed with it as it has frozen up on occasion.
Why can't they just work the bugs out of Vista with further service pack releases before they introduce a new OS while Vista is barely out of it's infancy.

I'm surprised they even send updates for anything that isn't brand new.

Well...they at least have to do a few updates. The first recipients are basically the guinea pigs they use to work out the kinks.

Hi there! Windows Vista is actually a good programme with some flaws though. I´m running it on both my laptop and stationary. You need good specs though.
Both my computer has amd athlon dual core 64 bit and 2 gig in ram so it runs smoothly,
Have heard though that Windows 7 that comes out in August has gotten great reviews. This is almost the same operating system as Vista only a small update.
You need good specs for that too. xx
