I've only gone tanning a few times and I don't plan on ever going again. I don't like the risk of skin cancer, plus I didn't find them to be especially effective -- I just ended up getting burnt and irritated skin.
I don't know if there are weight limits on the beds, but people beyond a certain height probably wouldn't be able to fit in them. At the salon that I went to, you wouldn't be able to fit in there if you were above 6'0" or so. As for tan lines, I wound up with my back and chest getting some color, while the sides of my torso were unaffected.
I don't know about tanning in the nude. People do it, but you run a higher risk of getting burnt on areas that haven't been exposed to the sun as often as, say, your face or arms.
Overall, I'd recommend sunless tanning. It's much less expensive than multiple tanning salon visits (which you'll need if you want to gain any noticeable color), you won't put yourself at risk of getting skin cancer, and the science of sunless tanning has really evolved to where -- if done correctly -- you can't tell the difference between a sunless tan and a UV tan. Gradual tanners like Jergens Natural Glow are really popular right now.
Check out sunless.com if you want more information. And, no, I don't work for them or anything like that.
