Do you have a best friend? Tell us about them . . .

My best friend is (I'll call him 'Travis'). I met him in 1986. That's 36!!! years ago. I had a friend named Dale and I went to the beach. Dale was with Travis and I met Travis. Travis likes interior design. He works at a hotel. We are going to see the Pet Shop Boys in October. (But with my current anxiety, I dont know if that will happen). I literally thought of him tonight and he called. I've noticed we have this ESP where I think about him and he calls me. We are like brothers. But we dont talk about sex.

I was at the baths and I ran into Travis who was putting on leather underwear. I like leather. We could have shared out interest in leather but we just dont talk about sex. Travis' sister was on Sally Jessy Raphael. She was a prostitute and in a disguise but I thought "I know this person" and I realized it was Travis' sister.

Travis and I lived together at one point. It went well. He got a better job and moved out. Travis is literally one of the nicest people out there.

PS: It's o.k. if you don't have a best friend ;-)

I haven't had a best friend, in the sense of a go-to buddy to do social things with, since leaving Albuquerque. I've always tended towards having several good friends, but not always a single running buddy. And several times in my life, my closest friend has been a woman, sometimes older.

My friend in Albuquerque was a generation younger than me. We met via online introduction, but never dated. He had just graduated as an older student with a biology degree and was starting a job as a test tech at a medical testing lab. He had social anxiety disorder and was under stress as he started his job and was dealing with a bad roomie. His family lived three hours away, so I kind of became a helper to him, more like an uncle than a parent.

We are different folks. He's a minimalist, a scientist, and socially shy. I'm obviously extroverted, a collector of odds and ends, and adventuresome. But, we found good company in one another, and ate out, travelled, and occasionally went to a concert or museum together.

He's visited me once I moved to Huntsville, and had a full beard and looked quite Russian, which was surprising. He's tall and has grown into his skin better and is more relaxed now. I miss having him around to do things with. I'm hoping to have time and money to take some good trip to Europe or South America and take him while I'm still young enough to do long trips. He doesn't make much money, so I have to help if we do anything that costs much, and I'm fine with that.

We have some really fun memories together of miscellaneous things that happened when we were out, or on a trip.

There are several friends I keep in contact with now in Arkansas, California, Alaska, Texas, Wisconsin, and Tennessee, but not Albuquerque. He doesn't really like talking on the phone, so I respect that.

For many years I wasn't sure if I had a "best friend", because I had that romanticised idea about best friends being always together and doing exciting things together and I never had that.
Today I'm sure: my best friend is Elmer (fake name). Elmer and I met in pre-school when we were 4. We weren't friends in the beginning. He was socially awkward and I was a sensitive little (gay) boy. Being the 2 odd balls in the class, we became good friends around age 10. We went through school together until age 18. After that we both entered the same university. Later he changed his career, I went abroad, he lost his dad, my sister got ill... and we've always been there for each other. For many years we've been meeting only 4-5 times a year, we have long walks and talk about everything. And we always call each other on our birthdays, that's a sacred tradition.
Elmer isn't the most exciting person (neither am I) but he knows me extremely well and I can count on him anytime I need.

I have never thought of anyone as a best friend. If I feel close to someone they are considered a friend for the most part.

People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,
He's a warm hearted person who'll love me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my best friend,
He's a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.

People let me tell you 'bout him he's so much fun
Whether we're talkin' man to man or whether we're talking son to son.
Cause he's my best friend.
Yes he's my best friend.

Some days, I doubt I have *any* friends, best or otherwise... 😢 At other times, I guess I'd say all friends are pretty casual. They'd be sad if I got run over by a bus--but they probably wouldn't spend the next year crying about it, etiher.

One thing I can say for sure--the last time I used *best friends* label was in elementary school. And, looking back, I definitely wonder if those *best friends* were really friends, given some of the crap that happened. On the other hand, though, at one point one of those toxic *best friends* was the closest thing I had to a friend, so I guess that would, by default, make him *the best*.

Hard to believe Bill Bixby was a star.

I thought that the guy I had been friends with for 25 years was my best friend. It turns out he is just a good friend. He betrayed me royally at the beginning of the year and it has put a distance between us, sadly.
I have another very close friend who has never let me down and has been incredibly supportive over recent difficult times. We have known each other for 20 years and I think now he can be classed as best friend material. I will never be able to open up to him quite as freely as BF1 but I feel he will never let me down.
