  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Thank you...

You’re welcome, on behalf of my grandfather.

Or do you mean the time I finally left from Schiphol to Edmonton so you could enjoy your country without tourists and transiting passengers?

No, not at all.

Amsterdam deserves all the trashy tourists it can get.

You are welcome. Or we are welcome.

My mother and grandparents were so thankful too.

A lot of my family was involved in the underground, sheltering Canadian soldiers in their farm houses in Friesland...and it was a Canadian who taught my mother to smoke at age 12 (hmmmmmmm).

It was just in time, because the Germans took my grandfather away after occupying their farm for weeks and he managed to find his way home wearing a German uniform as the discipline completely broke down.

I still have the first package of matches that a Canadian gave my grandmother after liberation.

My parents went back on the 50th anniversary of liberation...the first time my Dad was on an airplane...and of course he was treated 'royally.'

I'm not a hawk, although working my whole career in defense and aerospace, but I'm thankful we entered the war.

It's perfectly understandable why the US was loath to go back to war in Europe in just a generation, but history is what it is, and we were morally obligated to act.

I'm glad Europe is a different place as a result, and that Germany reformed.

And, of course, it's great that the countries like Netherlands got to retain their own freedom, identity, and culture.
