Growing up, did you ever have the joy of new appliances arriving in the house and then getting to make a fort out of the boxes?

Usually a rare but fun treat.

Today our kitchen is home to a 3x3x5 box our new built-in BBQ came in and we have been making it into a total Barbie cum Mordor fort for Missy and Norbu. They are making quite the use of it so far.

When I was a kid, we got to make these into everything from space craft to castles....

No, but we had pallets we made forts out of.

Surprisingly the boys don’t care for boxes.

I was more into tents. You know, when you tie a string between two trees, throw a blanket over it and weigh it down with rocks. Perfect place to play "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" with the other neighborhood children.

My cats have always been into boxes. There's been a big old computer chair box in the hallway for years. I cut holes in the sides and made a flap in the top to drop toys in. It's annoying and ugly but she loves it, so it stays.

Never had the experience of my family getting new appliances. The last new appliances my parents bought were bought before I was born, and, back then, appliances were built to last, so no new appliances were needed. With how short lived modern appliances can be, I wonder if some kids today find it boring having the appliance delivery resulting in an empty box? "We just got a big box last month...the month before...and the month before that!"

Kids today don't actually play in boxes. They sit on the couch and download the app.

We used to have a blast with found boxes when we were kids. Six of us would squeeze into a fridge box and walk the streets crashing into thing.....fun times.

I remember being inside a box buts that's another story.

We did the sheets and blankets over furniture and stuff to create tents and passages.

I am cutting a flap into the box today, so that it is a new thing. And every few days I'll add another so that it keeps the cats interested until it is in tatters. A good box usually takes up space in the kitchen for a few months until it is all chewed and torn and has no more structural integrity.
