Which free antivirus do you use?
I know there are very good ones, but I've heard many bad things about them.

I use Avast and like it a lot. Never tried AVG but a lot of people use it. Stay away from Symantec stuff though.

I've used AVG free edition for a few years and think it's better then the ones you pay for like Norton or Mcafee. Most of the complaints by reviewers are that it doesn't include spyware removal. But there are also free versions for that (such as Ad-aware (which is also free) from lavasoft.de and Spybot search and destroy (also free from safer-networking,org). My experience is that all in one solutions don't work as well as the seperate programs. Just my opinion. If you don't mind updating and running seperate programs, why pay money!..|

I use AVG, haven't been using it long but I
like it better than the ones I paid for. Doesn't
slow the computer down.

Define "free" :p

I'm using ZoneAlarm for XP and I'm experimenting with Kaspersky for Vista. We use Symantec at work. I have yet to have a virus issue with any of them.

AVG.

Or a Mac or Linux.

I use AVG (free), Zone Alarm Firewall (free), Spybot and Ad-Aware SE (free) and Spywareblaster (free).

I find the combination extremely effective. In 4 years I have had one (minor) trojan get through - and that was easily eliminated/rectified.

Same here. I use AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware. Plus a-squared.

Completely free no charge whatsoever.
Hard to believe but true.

I've been using AVG, but now I'm having serious problems with it. Can't run it, can't delete in order to re-load it, et cetera.

I'd try Avast, but can't find any links to the free version. I thought I had found it on the company's website, but step 2 of the 3 step registration process involves a chunk of change. Not free at all.

Any help would be appreciated!

TIA

yea i put AVG on vista

and windows defender for spyware

Per info here at this forum I had a choice of AVG or Avast. I chose Avast and have run it for a couple of months. The other day something got into my PC. At first I noticed the modem had disappeared and when I decided to boot up in safe mode and see what I could do, it stopped booting up. Now it does nothing.
I had 2 80g hard drives. I put all my old files in the new one, so I have the old one still with files. I have a feeling all the new files in the new hard drive are gone.
Anyone have an idea how to boot up the infected HD?

you can use a bootable disk version of one of the linux flavours to retreve your data it worked for me until i realised that the problem wasent windows but the sd card reader which was attached to a usb slot with no card in it #-o

Create a BartPE CD on another PC and boot from it. The BartPE CD can recognise external drives like USB drives/flash drives (have them plugged in on boot) and you can copy your stuff from the hard drive to the external drive. It also has antivirus tools but you'll need to read the instructions.

Remember to scan everything you rescue too.

You could also use the other hard drive as your main drive and install Windows to it.

The Linux brigade will be in shortly to give you viable alternatives also ;)

Sorry to take so long to answer. Been busy.
midway in the download of BartPE a friend came by and said since I have another tower to move the HDs to it and see what happens. We did and turns out the power switch on front of tower didn't work. I don't know why it was acting so crazy, lookin like a virus, but ran virus scan and found nothing.
But I finished the download and will save it in case I need it in the future.
Thanks a lot for your help.(!)

I just started using AVG, and now what is a good Firewall for Vista? ZoneAlarm is not compatible with Vista.
