From Aston Martin to Volvo - everybody's asking why new vehicles no longer seem to have bumpers. Repair costs for any body panel can exceed the trade-in value of the whole vehicle. The owner of a new Rivian R1T set the online world abuzz when he posted a video showing the dented rear fender on his truck with a $41,000 repair estimate.

You guys here at JUB were the first to alert me to cars that lose all resale value in 60 seconds, can't be serviced outside the warranty period, and must be totalled after even a low-speed fender bender accident.

Here's the video of the famous Rivian truck repair. Oh lordy, what a world.

I would leave that bump where it was. It does not affect the driveability of the truck.
Time was every garage had a panel beater who could pop out minor damage for a few hours labour charge.
It is a skill that is no longer profitable enough.

The bump adds character, leave it. And Lordy Grace that video was overstimulating. After ten seconds I had to click it off and run to the kitchen for my lavender inhaler and some chamomile tea.

We don't even bother any more.

It used to be that my partner couldn't stand to see any dentage on our vehicle.

...and then after a few times where people dented our machine in the parking lots...he seemed to realize we had nothing to prove.

And at this point, we are driving our Pilot into the dirt and just call it Patina.

Vehicles no longer have bumpers because of EU (and probably US as well) regulations meant to cut down on pedestrian injuries and deaths.

A few months ago I needed body work done on my Mercedes and found that the shop recommended by the dealer charged 150% more than the shop recommended by my next door neighbor, which eventually chose.

I remember my father commenting about 2000 that when he got his next car, maybe he should take a hammer and whack the fender with it before driving the car off the dealer lot. That way, you don't have to worry about the first dent.

Practical folks may as well get used to having dents and dings on cars and trucks. I swear for all the others that some people have more money than brains.
