It happens. Today's superstar is next week's punchline is next month's trivia question answer. That's the nature of pop music.

Lex

True, Lex.

Incredible though that Madonna's first placing as one of the Top 10 Female Artists of the Year came in 1984. She was No. 2 (right behind Cyndi Lauper).

And then for her to place at No. 8 for 2001, 17 years later, utterly freaking fantastic!

Oh, no doubt. I'm not meaning to discount her incredible longevity. But to bemoan her fate at being superseded is a bit like complaining that your favorite team lost a game after winning twenty straight. It's bound to happen eventually. :)

And I think she's put up a very formidable body of work. Several of her albums (to me) hold up extremely well years after the fact. I do think she's become too much of a producer's pawn in the last several years - she ends up sounding like a guest star on her own album, whereas she never sounded that way throughout the 80s and 90s, no matter how good or bad the albums were. That said, the fact that she's even creating music worth listening to almost a quarter century after her first hit is notable.

Lex

she didn't make billboard..... but she's my lady of the decade (of the century..... oh god i'm old)

and she's the first woman to own her record label.

(and lucky bitch she gets to get jiggy with carmen electra)

Joan Jett friggin' rocks. I sat in front of her on a plane once. All I wanted to tell her was, "I wore out my 7" of 'Fake Friends'." Been doing it her way since 1980 - doesn't accept corporate sponsorships or nuttin'.

The song "I Hate Myself for Lovin' You" was written by Joan and Desmond Child. Anyone know any other songs written by a lesbian AND a gay man? :)

Lex

^Oh, no. haha No, way, no how.

JUST looking at that list I think the woman with the most power to top 2007 will be Kelly. Which will tie her with Christina for most times at #1. I think those 2 will be the 2 at the end battling it out for Female Artist of This Decade. And with Christina's latest airplay and Kelly's hype for her new CD, I will give the edge to Kelly.

Mariah's released a total of three albums this decade, and two of them were (to put it very kindly) not so hot - both artistically and commercially. Mariah would need another album with the same sales as Mimi - or better - to be considered, I think.

Lex

Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Mariah Carey

Yeah, no other country sends mindless pop to the top of the charts.

Oh, wait - remember "Las Ketchup"?

Lex

thats a really good list killerbee.....but they've forgetting somebody really important

The Queen Bee LIL' KIM!! OOOOOOOW OOOWWWWW!

Kelly Clarkson is great but she'll have to move 17 million albums over the next two years in order to outsell 22-million-selling Britney Spears (and no, that doesn't include most of the sales of 1999's "Baby ... One More Time").

Here's how I think the Top 10 Ladies Of This Decade will shape up in November, 2009:

1. Britney Spears
2. Christina Aguilera
3. Shania Twain
4. Norah Jones
5. Beyonce
6. Alicia Keys
7. Kelly Clarkson
8. Avril Lavigne
9. Carrie Underwood
10. Jennifer Lopez

Don't bang your head against a brick wall, Renegade, over Madonna coming in at #15 in 2006. I am sure she's crying all the way to the bank, considering that her "Confessions" album was one of the most financially and critically successful of her entire career, and her "Confessions" world tour last year broke the record for the highest grossing concert tour by a female artist in pop music history.

How many of the others on this list do you think will be achieving that level of success nearly 25 years after they first stepped into the limelight? Not many of them, if any at all, I'm guessing.

I really wouldnt be surprised if Britney Spears recieved the Female Artist of the Decade. Her sales, hits, and cultural impact outrank all of the others. But for the overall Artist of the Decade, I think Eminem might give her a run for her money. His sales are up their too and he has plenty of hits.

Sadly, NYCBum, you're right. Eminem, in addition to winning 9 Grammys and an Academy Award, has sold 28 million albums so far this decade (compared to Spears' 22 million).

And he'll certainly sell plenty more when he comes out of retirement within the next year or so.
