Well, since Valentine's Day is around the corner, I thought I'd share a small story that happened to me last night.

So, I went to my library last night to return some dvd's I had rented and a couple books. While I was there I decided to use the computers to check my email.Sitting next to me was a girl wearing flannel Pajama pants, a gray tank top and fluffy slippers. It looks like she wasn't planning on leaving the house and just threw a coat on and came down to the library. Anyway, she was I'd say about mid to late twenties, cute, and typing something on the computer.

What got my attention real fast was, how can I say this? She smelled. It was a, uh.....well a very natural femine smell if you know what I mean. No perfume or soap or anything chemical, just natural woman. It smelled very clean and pleasant. I found it very difficult to work I was arroused so much. Now, I have a girlfriend and I noticed her natural scent drives me wild, but this girl's was very nice. I could be wrong, but my guess was she was not wearing any underwear under the pajama pants. I was sitting right next to her (my arm was about 5 inches from hers) and the computer area is in a small room. It was just the 2 of us and I was very close to her.

Has anyone ever had this happen? I went home and told my girlfriend (she's really cool about stuff like this and we are 100% honest with each other) She kept asking me to describe the smell and asked if I would have fucked her. I said no, of course not. I didn't think she was ugly, but she was cute. It was not a physical attraction but a sexual attraction. This has happened in the past with me with guys, so its not just a female thing with me. However, I have noticed with men I am more drawn to their sweat where with woman its more just their natural scent. We're talking Purely animal like instincts. Anyway,I got so arroused I could not concentrate and I was begining to sweat. I got such a hard on. I kept sniffing without trying to make it obvious. I just couldn't get enough of the smell of her.It was her smell that drove me wild. I tried to describe to my girlfriend how it was different from hers and how neither hers or this girls was better than the others. I then began telling my GF stories about past men and their smells. Another weird thing is I have noticed when it comes to sniffing guys around their balls or dicks and girls in their vaginas, its all the same to me. Neither one grosses me out, however, each has a different odor, both of which I like very much. I am amazed at how smells trigger various emotions and responses. When I have sex with my GF I always cover my fingers with her natural juices. It makes me want to fuck her with passion. When I'm ontop of her I put my fingers up to her nose and let her smell her own scent from my fingers and she turns into a wild animal!! Its SO WEIRD, but when we have sex and I don;t shower friends can tell when I walk in that we had sex. They can smell it on me just like an animal. To me thats pretty hot but to them its pretty gross (LOL) Am I alone on this? Hope I am not grossing anyone out here but I find this subject fascinating!

The olfactory sense is evolutionarily our oldest. I have always that you need to like the way your lover smells or any chance of a long term relationship is off. Smells trigger memories as well and can be as powerful as any other sense we have. The fact that your bi and deal differently with the scent of men vs. women is interesting and makes you wonder just how "wired" for our preferences we really are. Watch our canine friends and you really get a lesson about how potent smell is in determining relationships. For dogs it is the number 1 sense. For humans, sight is probably the primary sense, but the more basic the activity we're involved in the more smell and it's counterpart, taste, become. Are your friends really offended or turned on by your "sex stink"? I suspect they are not being honest about it and are not grossed out but secretly turned on.

I'm totally with you on this one Romantico. Smell is super important to me too. I have had two semi-lovers, one man and one woman, who I just couldn't get with because they smelled... wrong. Actually, the woman smelled like my grandmother so that pretty much says it all.

I love face sitting, having my lover sit on my face (literally). There is no getting away from the smell when it's practically smothering you! I love male armpits too, the muskiness is something else.

If I don't shower after sex the smell is so distracting I can't bear it!

Smell is also why men pee standing up! It's a throwback to when our male ancestors marked their territory. The higher up on an object you got your scent the better the wind would take it and move it around letting everyone else (all those beta-males) know who was boss.

Hey, check this out! I am SO Buying this book today!

When I made out with Matt behind the arts-and-crafts building the summer after eighth grade, his breath smelled like tennis balls. Then, a few years ago, I opened a can of tennis balls close to my face and caught a whiff of that rubbery glue. I immediately remembered Matt's sharp, speckled cheekbone lit by a fluorescent light. I liked making out with him then, I like the memory of it today, and I play tennis often.

This phenomenon is explained in The Scent of Desire, a new book by Rachel Herz, a psychologist widely recognized as the world's leading expert on the influences of smell. Using everything from cognitive-behavioral techniques to MRIs, Herz explains how our olfactory abilities help determine who we date, who we dump and what we buy, be it the directionless unemployed loser we can't stop thinking about, the gorgeous heart surgeon who repulses us, or the strawberry-scented car freshener that, for some reason, turns us on every time we slide into our hatchback.

Your book is the first scholarly study I've read that talks about the phenomenon of breaking up with someone because of their smell. I've actually ended relationships for that reason. It's a relief to have that validated.

Our body odor is the external manifestation of our immune system. The immune-system match is particularly important for women because they have a huge cost to bear in terms of the time and energy it takes to reproduce. If the goal is to go forth and multiply, you want to make sure that any child you have is going to survive and reproduce, and the most important thing in that respect is that they're healthy. But there's no Brad Pitt of body odor — it's about the fit between your immune system and somebody else's. His immune system can't be too close to yours because it might pair up something bad. Women's sensitivity to scent is highest during ovulation, when it's most important that you're making the correct choice. But this is all thrown out of whack if you're on the pill.

Ever seen the movie. The scent of a woman. You just had a very old, natural, anaimalistic drive to reproduce experience. That's all. Nothing else.

I also think the subject is amazing. Do you guys know that you can supposedly buy sex pheromones? They may be natural enhancers or something. It is suppose to attract people to you. Anyone know more about this? This is deep

I don't think that it's fair to dismiss this particular magical sensual experience as being purely biological as all sexual behaviour has its roots in biology.

He's in a relationship,She was not Super-Model Hot.It was all based on her smell. I have to say given those factors,It was just a basic biological responce to her scent, nothing more, nothing less.

Romantico, I understand what you're saying. Years ago I was curious about why I seemed to be aware and respond so BASICALLY to human smells, especially ones of arousal, so I studied it. Ended up teaching a graduate course about it, where the initial text was The Scented Ape: The Biology and Culture of Human Odour by David Michael Stoddart.

Your desription of the woman at the library was great! I have responded viscerally and immediately in the same way in inconvenient public places like elevators.

Arco, glad I'm not the only one. I think I am more sensitive with smells than any other of my senses. My grandma used a certain perfume back when I was 4 or 5 at a family reunion and she has not used it since. Recently I was at a church event for my Mom and someone there had the same perfume on. It literally took me back where I could remember posing for the pic we took that day, an argument with family members, what food was being served at this event, and other details I have no idea how I have been able to remember after all these years. It was weird, but this perfume really was relaxing for me to smell.

Huntneo, not sure how to take that.....but I think I love you (LOL) ;)

Well, I still say younger girls are more open minded than older ones. However, I think my GF may be bisexual herself and doesn't know it yet.We haven't talked about it, but she is very curious about women and seems to think I have all the answers. We watch alot of lesbian themed movies lately. We went to a benefit for a gay charity last weekend and she loved it. She flirted with the gay guys and women and really loved the way they partied. Lately she has become fascinated with drag queens. (LOL)

So yeah, I'm a lucky guy. I think I may have finally got it right. If she turns out to be bisexual herself,we're gonna have even more fun. Her friends and family already hate me so this will really push them over the edge!

the sense of smell is greatly undervalued -- a few years ago I read in "A Natural History of the Senses" that a loss of the sense of smell was very often followed by a loss of sex drive because the two are connected much more closely than we suspect.

I have a thing for smell as well, but... and this is probably cheating... it thrills me when a guy or girl is wearing a fragrance/perfume which I either have (guy) or recognise (guy or girl).

I go absolutely ape-shit with fragrances - I have about 12 at home, all in circulation and regular use - and it always raises the allure of a guy or girl when the scent wafting after them grabs me as well.

I'm so glad I'm not alone on this. I was almost afraid to post it in fear people would think its just weird! Like I said, I am in touch with my sense of smell more than any other senses. Since I am so in touch with my femine side I feel a closeness to women that I don't think heterosexual guys have ( I've been told by other ex girlfriends that bisexual men make better lovers/boyfriends than hetero guys) I see that as a major advantage. My sense of smell brings out another side of me as well. My animal/primal side. I am very much in touch with that side as well and I turn very primal when I smell my lover (or a complete stranger at the library). It makes me incredibly horny. One day in the kitchen I walked by my GF as she was cooking some dinner and I got a wiff of her. I literally began dry humping her like a dog would hump someone's leg (I'm not kidding) Our sense of smell in so intersting and finding someone who's scent you respond to is incredible in my opinion.

oh my god Romantico!!!! you are totally right with everything!!!!(!) but yeah at work there was this girl that i fancied and her smell would send me off my dial!!! as you said its just a natural smell but it does something, however in scientific terms what attracts us to someone is their natural smell, and all i can say is that her smell would cause an endorphin traffic jam im head. Though i think it should be taken into consideration ones sensitivity to smell & taste, cause i dont feel weird saying this as you have expressed your embarrassment with some things, but i really get turned on by the smell of pasta!! yes i said it pasta!!, i dont know what it is mabye its the garlic or maybe the cream cooking with the herbs, but all those aromas oh!! they make me feel soooooooooooooo good!!! (lol btw im not large!! i just lika da pasta!!)

I can see where some foods may turn some people on. Interesting about the pasta. Its been said that chocolate and oysters are Aphrodisiacs. I know seafood turns me on so who knows, you may be on to something.

clam broth.
fresh ground pepper.
sliced leeks
overripe canteloupe
a root cellar in Devon, with apples or potatoes

by the way, on another tack, don't different individuals have wildly different complexes of smells, some of them compelling? i don't mean strong smells, just distinctively their own. i've been close to people whose natural scents i'll remember long after i've forgotten their names or faces.
