Analyst: iPhone '4S' possible, but with no 4G

If you had your heart set on an iPhone with 4G LTE, the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 5 might not be for you. The good news is that the next version is still set to get a few enhancements and end up on more carriers.

"According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support," Misek wrote. HSPA+ being the standard that has a theoretical download speed of 21 Mbps, up from the 7.2 Mbps HSDPA/HSUPA 3G hardware that ships in the iPhone 4.

Analyst: No NFC chip in next iPhone

Apple's next iPhone will not be getting a near field communications (NFC) chip, according to a new report from analyst group Bernstein Research.

So obviously since Apple has not unveiled the upcoming Iphone, this not set in stone and can change.

But how many of you would be willing to upgrade to this Iphone if these reports turn out to be true?

Pro:
  • minor cosmetic changes
  • better cameras
  • A5 dual-core processor
  • HSPA+ support *

Cons:
  • No 4g LTE
  • No NFC

If you are eligible for an upgrade, and the new Iphone has these features (plus others like increased battery life, etc.) would that tempt you to upgrade?

Or would you wait for an Iphone with 4g LTE and NFC? (If those things are important to you)

Or would you go with a completely different cell phone?

With my bad experience with an iPhone 4 I might just go with a completely different cell phone.

Was it the whole antenna placed in a bad location fiasco? Or something else?

I might of been that, but I had bought a case from AT&T, 4 months down the road I get this stupid No Service issue, then every time I turned off the device and turned it back on it would send me to the Emergency Call screen. After a while it never returned to the Home screen it was just a huge headache and now a friend who works at Apple says I need to get it replaced. One huge fucking headache I was better off using my LG Xenon cause using the iPhone 4 was just a mess.

The phone looks brand new and they kept saying it might of been water damage. I don't know how that's possible.

I love mine and if the new one is faster and I am eligible for an upgrade why not.

I wouldn't upgrade mine unless they did put in an NFC. I experience some signal problems sometimes but not as much as others see to, I've yet to drop a call or have one fail since buying it last August.

The 5 is going to have to include some nice improvements to get me to upgrade.

I thought about waiting for an Iphone that has 4G and NFC, but then I thought I'd rather wait and see how that plays out. So I'm currently considering this Iphone 4s instead, (depending on final specs and reviews) and wait and see how the Iphone with 4G and NFC does and possibly upgrade to the Iphone after that.

I'm going to hold my breath until the release date draws nearer. I'm praying they throw in more to make it tempting.

I'm pretty naive when it comes to 4G, if the next iPhone supports it, do I have to upgrade my carrier plan for 4G itself?

I have no idea. I think for another carrier (I think Sprint) that has 4g or something similar, you had to get a specific data plan for 4G. I'm not sure how this would work for the other carriers like AT&T.

Did you ever even bother going to an Apple store? They would have replaced it no questions asked...

I'm ok with the iPhone 4 I have and can't imagine this new one having anything that convinces me to change.

Ok well that two hour drive would be well worth it if it means your iPhone gets replaced due to a defect.

I called my friend who works at an Apple store and he says that it's most likely the SIM card so I will be going to an AT&T store today to swap the SIM cards. At least AT&T is a 5 minute drive from where I am. If Apple wants to get serious and have more customers they need to add more Apple Stores instead of having one or two in the County.

Apple's doing what successful companies do; building around cities. Their customers will travel if they need to, and most of the US has a store close by. Unfortunately that doesn't help you, but they're not going to change strategies any time soon.

The more they had the less crowded most stores get, the one I went to get my phone exchanged had at least 120 people in there. Half of those people just went in to mess around on the computers while the rest were needing help with their problem.

For a retailer of their type they actually have a lot of stores. (385 as of this past month) They're just committed to a high-profit environment, which means that they won't build stores in low-population areas. One of Apple's proudest claims is that they're the most profitable retailer on the planet per square footage, and they won't change that.

What they really need is to work with the carriers to provide customers in-store (as in, Verizon or AT&T) swaps for defective units if an Apple store is not close. They could do it by using Applecare phone support and carrier system notations. Not sure Apple's ego would allow for it though.
