You shouldn't have to pay money to belong to a religion. While many mainstream religions hit you up for bucks, it's not really a prerequisite to membership.

But with Scientology, if you don't pay, you don't pray.

No it's just stupid. You can't call anything a religion and therefore be above criticism. I criticize christianity I will criticize scientology I will cirticize secular actions and religious ones. You do not get a get out of me calling you stupid card because you throw the word religion at me. And I understand you may call me stupid and I understand that what I won't do is whine and say my beliefs are so sacered you are not allowed to criticize or point to flaws in them because that's stupid. What if a "religious" ritual involves human sacrafice we're just suppose to let people murder other people?
