What? Me? Really?

He has been sentenced to five life sentences, a meaningless term, as he has only one life to give, and it won't be given, only penned.
The media has played up the allegedly shocking calmness with which he lied to the world and the media following the disappearance of his pregnant wife and daughters.
Of course, there is nothing shocking about it. There have been countless canny murderers in history, in all countries, at all times, who could kill without remorse, and proceed on to breakfast, their jobs, mistresses, or whatever mundane chores were next.
This case probably garnered more attention because the principal figures were white, middle class, and attractive by American standards.
What a colossal blunder, to murder and be caught. Murder is a moral blunder to be sure, but how much more so to plan such an act and expect to get away with it.
Some interesting images of the killer, his mistress, the couple, their families, but not of the children of course.
I guess his "reasoning" was that any remaining children from his first family would be an perpetual albatross around his neck as he began his second marriage. Margaret Mead correctly pegged us as a culture of serial polygamy. Unfortunately, now that middle class wealth has been put center stage, there are more men and women willing to kill in order to keep the assets as they move on to Marriage #2.
Mr. Watts is immoral, but I hardly think he is unique. And I'm sure Anadarko Petroleum would have preferred not to have the publicity.
Of course, the grandparents on both sides have shattered lived. Three children were disposed of like so much paper in a waste basket. There will never be a day in their future that they will not be defined by the slaughter.
