Rather surprisingly, the complete 1960 British movie about the downfall and imprisonment of the famous Victorian playwright, is on YouTube. For those unfamiliar with the story, Oscar Wilde was having an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, known as "Bosie." He was the son of the Marquess of Queensberry who was furious at the relationship and accused Wilde of being a "sodomite." The playright made the big mistake of suing Queensberry for libel but the case collapsed. As a result, he was charged with "gross indecency" with a variety of young men. In fact he underwent two trials as the jury couldn't agree on a verdict at the end of the first one.
Anyway, if you have the time to watch it and haven't seen it before, there are some excellent performances by Peter Finch as Wilde, John Fraser as "Bosie," Lionel Jeffries as Queensbury, Nigel Patrick as Wilde's defense counsel and James Mason as the prosecution counsel. Nice music score too by Ron Goodwin. Incidentally, John Fraser (pic down below) died last November aged 89 and was succeeded by his long-term partner Rod Pienaar. ...
