The worst US summer destination...

The one time I drive through Jacksonville I swore I’d never drive through it again 😂

When I drove back I took a different route just to avoid the city

^ This.

I have always wanted to see the Florida Keys but not if I had to go through Florida. And now even more so.

We went to Key West. It was "ok" but snooty. Seemed to be a lot of fuss to get there and be there when one can go to Galveston or South Padre Island for the same weather.

As a youth, I went on trips with groups to the Florida panhandle, and the Gulf beaches were enthralling, but mostly at dawn or night, when not crowded, and more natural wonder.

Florida does not appeal to me in general, but because of the tourism, the excessive money poured in from the Northeast, the crime and scammers, and the hedonism in general. It's like a muggier Vegas.

It does have seafood to rival Louisiana's, with much better (if artificial) beaches, but that is not worth going there.

If I ever make it back to Arkansas, I'll likely go down to Galveston, as Fredroy commented, but drive. Flying is becoming a non-starter. When an airline lets a kid scream for two hours unbroken, or a passenger kick a seat maliciously and then blames the reporting passenger getting kicked (I saw the video), then it's time to stop giving them the right to make us miserable.

And, driving is exploring, so the intent of "tour"ism for me.

Also, I don't trust any of the rating systems for locales. According to someone, Huntsville is one of best places in the country to live, but it is because the criterion are carefully selected to avoid telling the truth about the negatives, like showcasing the Magnficent Mile but ensuring no one mentioned the gangbanger drive-by's.

In my own experience, Niagara Falls was one of the worst. LOVE, love, love Upstate New York, but Niagara Falls is an eyesore on the edge of a natural wonder. The ridiculous amusement park up on the bluffs is as garish and ugly as any Victorian freak show, and the city just feels tawdry. Thank God the trip included a drive over to Rochester to meet a JUB friend and see the beautiful country on the way.

Santa Fe is a close second. All the contrived art scene stratificaiton of the place and its carpetbagger curators. Not the real New Mexico, and repulsively elitist and opportunistic.

I was thinking about this.

There's a similar American city that I prefer: Norfolk, VA. Less confusing, more fun.

This week Death Valley is supposed to get hotter than any place on earth, ever.

Has anyone thought to schedule Trump's full-bodied tanning appointment?

And I agree.

Whenever I've driven through this city, I end up crossing a bridge I have absolutely no intention of going over.

This city's riverside marketplace is so ordinary compared to others like Bayside, Miami.
I drove drove to Miami Beach FL and I must say F ck the whole state. I hope that shit hole break off and sinks. The expensive. Condo I rented was a total lie. There is nothing that can redeem that whole state! I hope it breaks off and sinks. 🖕Florida😈

There are many beautiful and extraordinary places in Florida. You just have to get away from the big theme parks, large cities, and crowded beaches. I would suggest looking for the "old" Florida attractions, such as the ones leftover from the 1950s and 1960s. And if you want to find good beaches, find out where the locals go, not the tourists.

Here is a picture of Bok Tower Gardens, a quiet sanctuary an hour's drive from Tampa or Orlando. It is a carillon bell tower on a high hill, surrounded by gardens.

I haven't been on a plane in years. But given the horror stories I hear, I frankly feel like I'd be just as happy never setting foot on a plane again.

I know a retired couple who fly several times a year. I'm pretty sure I've heard multiple rants about how awful flying is from the husband by now! And someone in my family, who did a fair amount of business travel once, commented how happy he was when the trip was close enough that he could travel by some means other than airplane.

Unfortunately, given my finances, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to have a car that could used for travel (i.e., trustworthy to survive several hundred mile road trip).

Yeah that is beautiful. I guess Miami ruined it for me. The beach was right outside then condo I rented. I am a little pissed about how the owner and Vrbo used trick photography and said Now queen size bed. It was a twin and the view. The pictures were the beautiful aqua blue waters reality look out the window the view was a tar n gravel rooftop past that the ocean. They wouldn't even let me publish my review. My best friend who is deceased now was going to MMI marine institute in Orlando his apartment was across the road from Disney world which I can't stand. The majority of people I saw were junkies prostitutes shit like that around Orlando. I don't do the tourist thing ever that's not my cup of tea. Thanks for sharing that cool place, but I will check it out on the net and avoid Florida.✌️

I live in South Jersey and the number of people who flock to the boardwalk is crazy. I used to go to Wildwood and Ocean City often but got bored with it.

In defense of some parts of Florida, Vizcaya has one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, and house is pretty nice, too. Not far away, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables can be pleasant, and the botanical gardens are wonderful. Forgetting the Trumps, Palm Beach and nearby towns on the inland waterway can be pretty seductive as well.
